USE THIS COLOUR TO KEEP WITH THE CONVENTIONS. I ALSO CHOSE A SIMILAR SERIF FONT TO THE E4
SKINS ONE AS IT IS EASILY RECOGNISABLE; CREATING A STRONG BRAND IDENTITY.
DEVELOP – I DEVELOPED THE LOGO AS I KEPT THE RECTANGLE BOXES NEAT INSTEAD OF RUGGED. THIS
IS BECAUSE IT SUITS MY GENRE BETTER AND CONNOTES MORE WEALTH THAN THE ORIGINAL LOGO IS.
CHALLENGE – IN TERMS OF CHALLENGING THIS CONVENTION, AT THE END OF THE TRAILER OF SKINS,
THE LOGO USES THE EFFECT ‘WIPE’ WHERE AS ON MY LOGO I USED ‘SHIMMER’ AS I THOUGHT THAT IT
FITTED IN WITH THE ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ GENRE MORE.
3. LOCATION
USING – THE LOCATION USED IN ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ (ON THE LEFT) IS IN A COFFEE SHOP. WE TRIED TO
RECREATE THIS CONVENTION BY FILMING IN AN AREA THAT WAS QUIET AND LOOKED LIKE A CAFÉ. WE
DID THIS BY GIVING OUR ACTOR (ON THE RIGHT) A COFFEE MUG TO KEEP WITH THE LOCATION.
DEVELOP – WE DEVELOPED THIS CONVENTION BY USING PROPS TO EMPHASISE OUR LOCATION. FOR
EXAMPLE, TO EMPHASIS THAT WE WERE IN A LIVING ROOM, PICTURES OF CANDLES AND CUSHIONS
WERE USED.
CHALLENGE – WE CHALLENGED THIS CONVENTION BY NOT BLURRING OUT THE BACKGROUND. AS YOU
CAN SEE ON THE LEFT, THE BACKGROUND IS BLURRED AS IT’S OBVIOUS TO THE VIEWER WHERE THE
ACTORS ARE LOCATED. HOWEVER WE FELT OUR BACKGROUND NEEDED TO BE SEEN IN ORDER TO PROVE
WE WERE IN A SHOP, LOUNGE OR GARDEN.
4. PROPS
THE ‘ONLY WAY IS ESSEX’ STARS (SHOWN ON THE LEFT) ARE ALL CARRYING DIFFERENT STYLES OF
HANDBAGS. THEREFORE IN MY SOAP WE DECIDED TO USE BIG HANDBAGS TO IN-KEEP WITH THE
CURRENT TOWIE PROPS.
USING – OUR MAIN CHARACTER (SOPHIE) BOUGHT HER BIG HANDBAG TO MANCHESTER WHEN WE
FILMED SO THAT WE COULD STICK TO THE CONVENTIONS SHOWN IN TOWIE, THIS WORKED EFFECTIVELY
AS BIG HANDBAGS SUGGEST WEALTH AND LUXURY – RELATING TO OUR GENRE.
DEVELOP – NO DEVELOPMENTS WERE MADE REGARDING PROPS.
CHALLENGE – WE CHALLENGED THIS CONVENTION BY DRESSING SOPHIE IN MORE CASUAL CLOTHES
THAN THE GIRLS FROM ‘THE ONLY WAY IS ESSEX’ AS WE DIDN’T WANT TO BE TOO EXTRAVAGANT.
5. COSTUMES
USING – ON THE LEFT, THE STARS ARE WEARING DRESSES TO PORTRAY THEIR WEALTH AND HOW
THEY’RE CONSIDERED UPPER-CLASS. WE TRIED TO REPLICA THIS BY WEARING LEOPARD PRINT AND
BLAZERS IN ORDER TO FIT IN WITH THE GENRE.
DEVELOP – WE DEVELOPED THIS CONVENTION BY USING A MIXTURE OF BLOUSES, BLAZERS, SHIRTS
AND SMART TROUSERS.
CHALLENGE – HOWEVER WE DID CHALLENGE THIS CONVENTION BY NOT WEARING DRESSES AS WE
THOUGHT THIS SUITED OUR SOAP MORE.
6. LIGHTING
IT IS A COMMON CONVENTION IN ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ FOR THE LIGHTING TO BE VERY CLEAR AND
BRIGHT. THEY USE ARTIFICIAL LIGHT ALL THE TIME AS THIS SUITS THEIR GENRE.
USING – WE TRIED OUR BEST TO FILM ON A DAY WHERE THE LIGHTING WOULD BE GOOD. FOR INSIDE
SHOTS WE USED LOTS OF LAMPS TO CREATE THAT BRIGHT LIGHT THEY USE IN ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’.
DEVELOP – WE DEVELOPED THIS CONVENTION BY USING A MIXTURE OF ARTIFICIAL AND NATURAL
LIGHT CONSIDERING IT WAS A BRIGHT DAY.
CHALLENGE – HOWEVER WE DID CHALLENGE THIS CONVENTION BY FILMING OUTSIDE (SHOWN IN THE
RIGHT PICTURE) WHERE THE LIGHTING WAS NOT ARTIFICIAL HOWEVER IT TURNED OUT NICELY AS IT WAS
A BRIGHT DAY OUTSIDE.
7. EYE-LINES
USING – BOTH SHOTS ARE A MEDIUM CLOSE UP. THIS ALLOWS THE AUDIENCE TO SEE THE
CHARACTER’S FACIAL EXPRESSION AND THE CLOTHES THAT THEY’RE WEARING. BOTH CHARACTER’S EYE-
LINE IS IN THE TOP THIRD OF THE CAMERA.
DEVELOP – WE DEVELOPED THIS CONVENTION AS IN THE ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ CLIP (ON THE LEFT) THE
BACKGROUND IS BLURRED, DRAWING MORE ATTENTION TO THE FEMALE CHARACTER. WHEREAS IN
OUR BACKGROUND WE PLACED ITEMS TO LET THE AUDIENCE KNOW WE’RE IN A HOUSE.
CHALLENGE – THE LIGHTING ON THE ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ CLIP IS A LOT MORE WARMER, IN OUR CLIP
THE LIGHTING IS A BIT MORE NATURAL.
8. CAMERAWORK
THE ORIGINAL ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ (ON THE LEFT) USES AN OVER-THE-SHOULDER SHOT TO MAKE THE
AUDIENCE FEEL AS IF THEY ARE INVOLVED IN THE CONVERSATION, BUT ALSO TO SHOW THE REACTION OF
THE OTHER CHARACTER.
USING - I DECIDED TO USE THIS TYPE OF SHOT AS IT LOOKS VERY PROFESSIONAL. (ON THE RIGHT) IS A
PRINT SCREEN FROM MY TRAILER SHOWING HOW I USED THE SHOT. I KEPT THE SHOT DISTANCE THE
SAME AS MADE IN CHELSEA’S AS I THOUGHT THIS WAS A KEY FEATURE AND SHOULDN'T BE CHALLENGED.
THE PINK LINES REPRESENTS IN BOTH IMAGES, THE EYE LINE IS IN THE TOP THIRD OF THE SHOT; THIS
GIVES THE READER DIRECT ADDRESS.
DEVELOP – I DEVELOPED THIS SHOT AS I INCLUDED MORE OF THE SECOND CHARACTER. IN MY CASE, I
CAPTURED MORE OF KIERAN’S HEAD SO THE VIEWER COULD SEE WHO CASON WAS TALKING TO.
CHALLENGE – IN TERMS OF CHALLENGING THIS CONVENTION, I DIDN’T CHALLENGE THIS SHOT A LOT AS
I THOUGHT THAT IT WORKED WELL. WE DECIDED IT WAS BEST IF THE BOYS WERE SITTING DOWN
RATHER THAN STOOD UP AS IT CREATES A MORE RELAXED ATMOSPHERE.
9. SHOT TYPES
USING – BOTH SHOTS ARE OF SHOES WALKING TOWARDS THE CAMERA. THIS CONVENTION ALLOWS
US TO SEE THE CHARACTER’S COSTUMES IN MORE DETAIL AND HOW THEY REPRESENT THE CHARACTER.
FOR EXAMPLE (ON THE LEFT) IN ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ HIGH HEELS ARE SHOWN TO LINK INTO THEIR
WEALTH.
DEVELOP – WE DEVELOPED THIS CONVENTION FURTHER AS WE FILMED TWO LOTS OF SHOES AND
THEN PUT THE CLIPS TOGETHER, WHEREAS IN ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ ONLY MILLIE’S SHOES WERE FILMED.
CHALLENGE – WE CHALLENGED THIS CONVENTION IN TERMS OF FILMING OUTSIDE WHERE THE
LIGHTING WAS MORE NATURAL, BUT ALSO BY WEARING MORE CASUAL SHOES SUCH AS BOOTS OR
FLATS, AS WE FELT THAT HEELS WEREN’T A NECESSITY TO SHOW OUR CHARACTER’S WEALTH.
10. SHOT DISTANCES
A RANGE OF SHOT DISTANCES ARE USED THROUGHOUT BOTH TRAILERS.
USING – A MEDIUM-CLOSE UP WAS USED IN ‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ (ON THE LEFT) SO THAT YOU COULD
SEE THE ACTOR’S FACIAL EXPRESSION AND EMOTIONS.
DEVELOP – NO DEVELOPMENTS WERE MADE REGARDING SHOT DISTANCES AS WE CLOSELY STUCK TO
CAMERA CONVENTIONS AS IT’S KEY WHILST MAKING A SCRIPTED REALITY.
CHALLENGE – WE CHALLENGED THIS CONVENTION BY INCLUDED MORE MEDIUM CLOSE UPS THAN
‘MADE IN CHELSEA’ TYPICALLY DOES AS WE WANTED TO CREATE LOTS OF TENSION AND EMOTION
PORTRAYED THROUGH THE CHARACTERS.
