2. What is RCC ?
RCC means Reinforced
Cement Concrete
It is a cement
concrete reinforced with
steel bars , steel plates ,
steel mesh , etc to
increase the tension
withstanding capacity of
the structure.
The above picture is an example of The Architect
LE CORBUSIER project, where he used RCC like plastic
3. The Advantages of RCC outweigh its
Disadvantages
Advantages
It is economical in
ultimate cost.
It is durable, long lasting,
fire resistant and not
attacked by termites.
Its monolithic character
gives much rigidity to the
structure.
It can be cast to any
shape.
Cost of maintenance is
nil.
Disadvantages
Skilled labour is engaged
in the work.
Constant checking is
required.
Scrap value of reinforced
members is almost nil.
4. Components of RCC Structures:
RCC Beams
RCC Columns
RCC Staircase
Foundations
Every component is designed according to the
load it carries and its position in the structure.
5. RCC Beam Design
RCC Beams are cast in cement
concrete reinforced with steel
bars.
Beams add rigidity to the structure
generally carry vertical
gravitational forces but can also be
used to carry horizontal loads.
There are two types of RCC Beam
Design
1) Singly reinforced beam
2) Doubly reinforced beam
7. RCC Column Design
COLUMN:
A Column is a vertical member whose effective length is
greater than 3 times its least lateral dimension carrying
compressive loads .
Column support beams which in turn support walls and
slabs.
The failure of a column results in collapse of the structure
so it should be given more importance.
Generally columns may be SQUARE,CIRCULAR, OR
RECTANGULAR shape.
8. Types of columns
Based on type of REINFORCEMENT:
1) Tied column
2) Spiral column
3) Composite column
Based on type of LOADING:
1) Axially loaded column
2) Eccentrically loaded column
Based on SLENDERNESS RATIO:
1)Short column
2)Long column
9. RCC STAIRCASE DESIGN
STAIRCASE:
Stair consists of series
of steps with landing at
appropriate intervals . The
stretch b/w two landings is
called FLIGHT. The room or
space where stairs are
provided is called staircase.
Types of STAIRCASES:
1) Straight stairs
2) Dog legged stairs
3) Open stair
4)Geometrical stair
10. FOUNDATIONS
The strength of the
Foundation determines the
life of the structure.
Design of Foundation
depends upon the type of the
soil , type of structure and its
load.
Higher the load bearing
capacity of the soil, the larger
the load it could safely carry.
Foundations are divided into
two types:
1)Shallow Foundations
2)Deep Foundations.
