The Silent Way method aims to form independent learners who use language for self-expression. The teacher acts as a technician to guide learning but does not directly teach, as learning is the student's responsibility. Students begin by associating sounds of the new language with colors using charts, learning basic building blocks like sounds through sounds they already know from their native language. The color-coding helps students learn spelling, reading and pronunciation.
