The direct method teaches foreign languages exclusively through the target language without using the student's native language. Classroom instruction, vocabulary lessons, and grammar instruction are all conducted in the target language. Translation is completely banned. The teacher introduces new vocabulary through pictures and objects and demonstrates grammar inductively. Students are encouraged to think and speak in the target language from the beginning. Techniques include reading aloud, question-and-answer exercises, dictation, map drawing and paragraph writing to encourage communication in the target language. Advantages include quick understanding of spoken language and better oral skills, while disadvantages include difficulty with large classes and explaining abstract concepts.
