This document discusses the benefits and challenges of open education resources (OER). The benefits include reducing costs for students, improving knowledge retention, increasing course visibility and available research information, and providing education for all. The challenges are a lack of available OER information, questions around sustainability, licensing, and adapting materials as well as student access after a course ends.

• Helps reduce cost to students for textbooks and other materials
• Helps the student with retention of knowledge
• Improves visibility of the course
• Increases information available for research
• Provides education for everyone

• Lack of available information – where to find OER
• Sustainability of OER
• Lack of public understanding
• It takes time for the instructor to adapt to and adopt OER
• Licensing questions – how do you know what can be adapted and
how to determine licensing of the information
• Students may want access to information after the course has been
completed
