The Poem:
Stanza I
Behold her, single in the field,
Yon solitary Highland Lass!
Reaping and singing by herself;
Stop here, or gently pass!
Alone she cuts and binds the grain,
And sings a melancholy strain;
O listen! for the Vale profound
Is overflowing with the sound.

Analysis
The poet talks about a young Scottish girl of Scotland who is all alone working
in the field while singing a sweet song.
The poet loves the songs too much and doesn’t want her to stop singing by his
passing by or stop. He afraid if seeing him, she might stop singing.
The song is sad, melancholic.
He wants the neighbours and other passer-bys to listen her song and
experience the proud feelings in the valley.

Stanza II
No Nightingale did ever chaunt
More welcome notes to weary bands
Of travelers in some shady haunt,
Among Arabian sands:
A voice so thrilling ne'er was heard
In spring-time from the Cuckoo-bird,
Breaking the silence of the seas
Among the farthest Hebrides.
7. GOPIKABAI SITARAM GAWANDE MAHAVIDYALAYA UMARKHED, DIST. YAVATMAL 7
Analysis
The poet compares the sweet voice of the lass with the sweet song of cuckoo
or the nightingale.
The nightingale always refresh the weary bands of travelers walking through
the Arabian deserts with its sweet song.
But the voice of the girl surpasses the song of the singing birds.

Stanza III
Will no one tell me what she sings?—
Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
For old, unhappy, far-off things,
And battles long ago:
Or is it some more humble lay,
Familiar matter of to-day?
Some natural sorrow, loss, or pain,
That has been, and may be again?
9. GOPIKABAI SITARAM GAWANDE MAHAVIDYALAYA UMARKHED, DIST. YAVATMAL 9
Analysis
The poet asks if anyone can explain the meaning of the song to him?
He guesses various probable meaning of the song but unable to understand.
It may be some sad past experience of about the battle fought in the past or
some sad note on day to-day matter?

Stanza IV
Whatever the theme, the Maiden sang
As if her song could have no ending;
I saw her singing at her work,
And o'er the sickle bending;—
I listen'd, motionless and still;
And, as I mounted up the hill,
The music in my heart I bore,
Long after it was heard no more.
11. GOPIKABAI SITARAM GAWANDE MAHAVIDYALAYA UMARKHED, DIST. YAVATMAL 11
Analysis
The poet listened to her song standing still and motionless.
The reaper is unaware of the speaker’s presence.
As he mounted up the hill , the sweet tune of the song stuck his heart.
As he walks away, the song fades from hearing but the impact is long lasting
and forever even if he walks away, it still linger in his mind.
