1. Music Videos
A music video is a video that is played alongside a piece of music. This video can
be anything from a narrative storyline to a complicated montage but different
genres have different conventions.
Alternative – Alternative music videos are one of the more simply made types of
videos as they are usually quite low budget. They are also quite often used to
make some sort of statement by the band for the audience to think about.
Rock – Rock videos will often be of the band performing in a dark gloomy
location to set the scene. There will also sometimes be a clip from one of their
tours to generate excitement amongst the audience. The band will be dressed in
dark clothing while also wearing many piercings and tattoos. They will also play
on the audience’s fears by including common fears or phobias like spiders and
vertigo.
Pop – Pop music is one of the more complicated types of music video to create,
as it requires a very high budget to be able to pay for the large amount of props,
expensive costume design and general misc en scene. There will also be a lot of
bright lights and colours with very fast editing to keep the audiences attention.
The star of the video (The singer) will always be attractive and be wearing very
little clothing to appeal to the audience more. A dance routine is commonly used
as well as low-angles on the lead singer to try and emphasize their importance in
the song.
Indie – The camera usually has more shots of the lead singer than the rest of the
band as they are the face of the band. Many videos that are a part of this genre
are made to look like a carefree environment to show the youth of the band. A
lot of videos within this genre are made to show someone going through a drug-
trip and so will use a variety of effects to emphasize this. For example, Time
lapsing and slow motion.
