Networking is developing and nurturing relationships, both formal and informal. Informal networks emerge for shared interests and form through interactions like lunch or activities outside of work. They provide affiliation, identity, risk reduction, and opportunities. Formal networks are officially recognized teams. Management should understand informal networks, identify attitudes within them, consider their effects, and integrate their interests with formal groups when taking action.
