It is the largest administrative division of Punjab. The division,
headquartered at the city of Gujranwala, covers an area of 17,206
km2. It is administratively subdivided into 6 districts.

15. AIR POLLUTION
• Smokes turning out from manufacturing plants, commercial
enterprises, homes and vehicles are creating of air contamination
• Causing asthma, respiratory diseases,
cancer, heart attacks etc.
• Air Pollution: 77.27 according to
Air Quality Index.
16. CONTI……
• Local anthropogenic activities and elevated geo-accumulation indices for different
suite of elements were used to indicate possible pollutant sources in this industrial
city to be traffic derived emissions, suspended soil, road dust, construction
materials, fossil fuel and industrial emissions, tanneries, chrome plating units and
metal smelters.
• Comparison of the pollution indices shows that Ba, Br, Ca, Cd, Na, Pb, Sb and Zn
have mean PLI, PI and IPI for both cities which are in the highly polluted category.
• Cu, La, Sc, V and Zr have pollution indices corresponding to high or extreme levels
in Faisalabad only while Cr and Ti are highly polluting in Gujranwala.
18. WASTE DISPOSAL
• Gujranwala is one of the most thickly populated
cities in the country, having the population of
about 2 million.
• According to a recent survey of the Punjab
Planning and Development Department, some 800
to 900 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) is
being produced daily in the city.
• The survey disclosed per capita increase of 1.5 per
cent annually while the population of the city has
been increasing at the ratio of 3 to 3.5 per cent per
annum, which reflects yearly 5 per cent increase
in the MSW.
21. SMOG
• An AQI of 403 was recorded in Gujranwala at 8am on 2 December,2019.
• Smog can cause or aggravate health problems such as asthma, emphysema, chronic
bronchitis and other respiratory problems as well as eye irritation and reduced
resistance to colds and lung infections.
• The ozone in smog also inhibits plant growth and can cause widespread damage to
crops and forests.
23. WATER POLLUTION
• Due to alarming increase in population and rapid industrialization, drinking water
quality is being deteriorated day by day in Pakistan.
• The primary source of contamination is sewerage (fecal) which is extensively
discharged into drinking water system supplies. Secondary source of pollution is the
disposal of toxic chemicals from industrial effluents, pesticides, and fertilizers from
agriculture sources into the water bodies.
• Anthropogenic activities cause waterborne diseases that constitute about 80% of all
diseases and are responsible for 33% of deaths. This review highlights the drinking
water quality, contamination sources, sanitation situation, and effects of unsafe
drinking water on humans.
