2. Mannich reaction
• In mannich reaction, formaldehyde is condensed with ammonia, in the form of its
salt and a compound containing an active hydrogen.
• This can formally be considered as an addition of ammonia to give H2NCH2OH,
followed by a nucleophilic substitution.
• Instead of ammonia, the reaction can be carried out with salts of primary or
secondary amines, or with amides.
• The reaction of a ketone, formaldehyde, and diethylamine with microwave
irradiation gave the Mannich product, a beta-amino ketone.
