5. ī§ Genre: Biopic, drama,
ī§ What is a biopic? Other examples?
ī§ Biopic: A biographical film, or biopic, is a film that dramatizes the life
of a non-fictional or historically-based person or people
ī§ Can you name the following biopic films and the real life people/stories
they were based upon?
9. ī§ Genre: Biopic, drama,
ī§ The film follows the story of notorious hip hop band N.W.A. in 1980s America.
Members of the band (Ice Cube and Dr. Dre) were co-producers.
ī§ Active from 1986 to 1991, NWA were pioneers of the gangsta rap subgenre, and
are widely considered one of the greatest and most influential hip hop groups
ever.
ī§ The lineup: Dr. Dre, Eazy-E,,Ice Cube, DJ Yella and MC Ren.
ī§ Eazy-E, Ice Cube and Dr Dre went on to have hugely successful solo careers.
ī§ Ice Cube is also a successful actor (Boys in Da Hood, XXX)
ī§ Dr Dre, now has his own Aftermath record label (Eminem and Kendrick Lamar),
and founded Beats Electronics (headphones, etc) sold to Apple in 2014 for $3bn.
10. ī§ Genre: Biopic, drama,
ī§ The rap group endured controversy owing to their music's explicit lyrics, which
many viewed as being disrespectful to women, as well as glorifying of drugs and
crime.
ī§ The group was subsequently banned from most radio stations. In spite of this,
the group has sold over 10 million units in the United States alone.
ī§ Drawing on their own experiences of racism and excessive policing, the group
made inherently political music. They were known for their deep hatred of the
police system, which sparked much controversy over the years.
ī§ The film title refers to the album and single of the same name
The album was one of the first to carry the "Parental
Advisory" labels
11.
12. § The film portrays events set predominantly in mid-1980âs Compton (Los Angeles,
California, USA).
§ During 1940s/50s, after years of deep south racial segregation, a growth in
manufacturing (fuelled by the needs of WW2) meant Compton had became a
relatively prosperous town with a high black population.
§ But by 1970s/80s, Compton had become overrun by racial tension and gang crime.
§ 1965 Watts Riots nearby (6 days, 34 deaths & $40+ million in property damage
following alleged police brutality), caused 'white flight', leaving a high
black, working class population behind.
§ During 1970s, many manufacturing industries relocated to cheaper locations
outside of city, leaving fewer jobs
§ Growth of 'Bloods' and 'Crips' gangs led to surge in violent gang crime, fuelled
by dealing crack cocaine.
§ 1972 had highest murder rate per capita in USA (42 murders/80k population)
§ In 1992, LA riots saw tensions again between African Americans and Police,
following acquittal of 4 police officers who had been filmed beating Rodney
King. 6 days and 63 deaths followed.

13. §The portrayal of 1980âs California, and the possible
glorification of N.W.A. as agents of social change, may
have been revised or influenced by subsequent events.
NWA are constructed as heroic outlaws, with many
criticising the way the film ignored the misogynistic
lyrics and band membersâ mistreatment of women.
14. §N.W.A (an abbreviation for Niggaz Wit Attitudes) were
among the earliest and most significant popularizers and
controversial figures of the gangsta rap subgenre.
§Their lyrics reflected the environment they came from,
surrounded by crime and hardship.
15. §N.W.A. were significant in terms of social change as
advocates for free speech, and anti-establishment
(government/police) producers of protest songs.
§They were also significant as highly successful black men
from disenfranchised American urban communities.
§N.W.A. were also heavily criticised for their misogynistic
lyrics and their promotion of a lifestyle that objectified
and marginalised women.
