INTRODUCTION
• This unit is designed to provide an opportunity for you to take
greater control of your own learning by independently
researching and presenting an investigation into a area of
personal interest within creative media production and
technology.
• It is intended that the personal investigative study should be a
precursor to the final extended project and may be used to
influence and inform direction and decision making for your
final project proposals.

• For this unit you will need to research and critically examine
the influence of historical and contemporary contexts on your
own practice.
• The unit will enable you to demonstrate a greater depth of
understanding of your discipline and place within it.

• The unit requires you to identify and understand the
principles and practices of your chosen subject and to
demonstrate your conclusions in an appropriately skilful
manner using the correct academic conventions to ensure
successful communication of ideas.

practitioners within your chosen disciplines.

SUMMARY
• We will study and discuss a range of critical perspectives and
contexts in relation to various creative media productions.
• You will choose an area of personal interest and conduct an in
depth study using the ideas we have studied in class and your
own research to write an extended essay (1500 words).
• You will carry out a range of research, looking at different
sources of information to build your argument.
• Your essay will need to follow the correct format for referencing
the sources of information you have used in your research.

to inform your final major project.
• It is often good to frame your study title as a question that

• Decide your area of study/investigation
• Begin (secondary) research into topic. Keep a record of all the sources you look at.
• Use secondary research to explore and develop key issues/debates relating to your
chosen area
• Formulate either:
– A question you will try to answer, or
– An argument (point of view) you will try to advance
• Use primary research
– To apply ideas learnt from from secondary researchSupport/oppose sides of the

• Formulate your conclusion
• Write up your essay, using the correct format.
