The document discusses the role of technology in education. It argues that technology allows for individualized, self-regulated learning and empowers students by giving them control over their own learning. The role of educators is to guide students and help them navigate information, set goals, and reflect on their learning. Technology can accelerate and amplify learning when used to enable collaboration, inquiry-based learning, and assessment of student progress. The role of a digital learning coach is to help teachers integrate technology effectively in their classrooms to provide engaging learning experiences for students and foster digital citizenship skills.
2. Educators are in
a business of coaching students to learn how to acquire
useful information and develop skills that are transferrable
to their future undertakings. While today’s generation is
more likely to be acquainted with digital technologies that
make information available and more accessible, students
are faced with information overloads from different media
and sources. From my perspective, I see the role of an
educator as to guide students in navigating across this sea
of information and to allow them to uncover the strengths
and talents in themselves. I believe that we should focus on
teaching students how to self-regulate – setting their own
academic goals, developing strategies to meet them, and
reflecting on their academic performance. This goal may be
achieved by the integration of digital technology that opens
up possibilities for individualized learning.
STRATEGIC LEARNING APPROACH
Coaching in a “Learning is a lifelong endeavor.
3. It provides opportunities for students to go deeper into their
learning by giving them the ability to consume, and more
importantly, to create. If we want to see technology being used in
powerful ways, we need to help teachers see and experience learning
in new ways. Teachers need to be able to explore the opportunities
technology provides and they need to be encouraged to share what
they learn and develop their leadership in the process.
As Michael Fullan once said, “Learning is the driver; technology is the
accelerator.” I believe that learners should be the driver and
technology, the accelerator. I believe in shifting the onus onto the
learners and empowering them to take control of their own learning.
Technology gives us the power to accelerate, amplify, and even
recreate learning. We, as educators and leaders, can make the most
of these new opportunities by embracing the role of learner.
Immersing ourselves in the learning process will give us a much
better understanding of the opportunities technologies bring to our
students. Focusing on the learner, not just the learning, shifts the
focus to a larger moral imperative to embrace opportunities to
educate and empower students in powerful ways. It is essential that
we continue to ask the question, “What is best for this learner? It is
now more important than ever to embrace the notion that, in
education, we are all learners. It’s only when we are willing to
constantly expand and evaluate our own thinking that we will be able
to create the environments our students deeply deserve.
EMPOWER STUDENTS
Integrating Technology to
Technology allows us to move from student engagement to
student empowerment.
4. I believe that teaching with technology
ignites students’ motivation to self-
regulate by challenging them to think
about what they are learning. Using social
learning tools (i.e. online social networks),
students are enabled to gather knowledge
from experts and professional
organizations in a networked learning
system. I believe that students become
active learners by using new technologies
to solve problems effectively.

5. I believe in using technology to encourage
students to work more effectively with one
another, by taking advantage of the
communication functions in new innovations.
Technology-mediated communication tools
allow students to create a closer, connected
community where they can meet, clash, and
grapple with one another’s beliefs and
opinions, and gain values within a mediated
contact zone.

6. My role as the Digital Learning Coach is to
assist teachers in using technology effectively
for assessing student learning, differentiating
instruction, and providing rigorous, relevant,
and engaging learning experiences for all
students. Digital Learning Coaches should
conduct needs assessments, develop
technology-related professional learning
programs, and evaluate the impact on
instructional practice and student learning.

8. How I can help teachers and students as
the digital learning coach?
1. Promote Digital Learning Essentials
How can I help to infuse the 5 Cs (creativity, critical thinking,
communication, collaboration, and compassion) into your
curriculum? Let's pump up one of your lessons or projects
and increase engagement in one of those not-so-fun units.
Let's help the students create something great!
2. Actively Participate in Collaborative Planning
I want to become an active member of your PLCs! If you even
remotely think that I could help develop a quick lesson, flipped
lesson, review, formative assessment, or even an extended
project, let me come plan with you!
3. Foster Digital Citizenship
We want students to create a positive digital footprint to help
ensure a successful future! Creating and collaborating online is
a great way for students to practice appropriate
communication and learn how to interact positively in a digital
environment. Let’s get your students "talking" and sharing.
