CARBOHYDRATES
-JUSTAINE MAE UNTAY
 - Are naturally occurring sugars, starches and fiber in food, all
carbohydrates are made up of sugar molecules.
 - Sugar molecules linked together form starches in fiber, in the body
starches, sugars are broken down in the digestive system to glucose/
Function:
 -The four primary functions of carbohydrates in the body are to
provide energy, store energy, build macromolecules, and spare
protein and fat for other uses. Glucose energy is stored as glycogen,
with the majority of it in the muscle and liver.

examples of carbohydrates:
 Glucose.
 Galactose.
 Maltose.
 Fructose.
 Sucrose.
 Lactose.
 Starch.
 Cellulose.
3 types of carbohydrates and
examples:
 Monosaccharides - These are simple carbohydrates, also
called simple sugars, which are made of one sugar. ...
 Disaccharides - These are also simple carbohydrates that
consist of two chemically-linked monosaccarides. ...
 Oligosaccharides - These are complex carbohydrates that
consist of three to ten sugars.
categories of carbohydrates:
 Monosaccharides.
 Disaccharides.
 Oligosaccharides.
 Polysaccharides.
 Nucleotides.
Sources of Carbohydrates:
 Simple sugars are found in the form of fructose in many fruits.
 Galactose is present in all dairy products.
 Lactose is abundantly found in milk and other dairy products.
 Maltose is present in cereal, beer, potatoes, processed cheese,
pasta, etc.
 Sucrose is naturally obtained from sugar and honey containing
small amounts of vitamins and minerals.
