Tectonic plates are large pieces of the Earth's crust that slowly move over time. There are three types of plate tectonic boundaries: divergent boundaries where plates move apart, convergent boundaries where they push together often forming mountains, and transform boundaries where they slide past each other which can cause earthquakes.
