Science
Basic research is performed without thought of practical ends. It results in
general knowledge and an understanding of nature and its laws. This general
knowledge provides the means of answering a large number of important
practical problems, though it may not give a complete specific answer to
any one of them. The function of applied research is to provide such complete
answers.
Basic research training is pervasive in medical schools. With PhD programs
offered in disciplines such as the biomedical sciences, computational
biology, and neuroscience, the basic science field has been well established.
Competencies within the basic sciences have been clearly defined, allowing
for effective development and evaluation of educational programs.

DefinitionsofClinicalResearch
In 1997, the NIH Director’s Panel on Clinical Research issued the
following 3-part definition of clinical research:
1. Patient-oriented research. Research conducted with human
subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues,
specimens and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator
(or colleague) directly interacts with human subjects. Excluded
from this definition are in vitro studies that utilize human
tissues that cannot be linked to a living individual. Patient-
oriented research includes: (a) mechanisms of human disease,
(b) therapeutic interventions, (c) clinical trials, or (d)
development of new technologies.
2. Epidemiologic and behavioral studies.
3. Outcomes research and health services research.

DefinitionsofTranslational
Research
The definition of translational research is less clear than
the definitions of basic and clinical research. The NIH
offered the following definition:
Translational research includes two areas of translation.
One is the process of applying discoveries generated
during research in the laboratory, and in preclinical
studies, to the development of trials and studies in
humans. The second area of translation concerns research
aimed at enhancing the adoption of best practices in the
community.Cost-effectiveness of prevention and
treatment strategies is also an important part of
translational science.

Learning
Objectives
The student, before graduation, must have demonstrated for the
faculty, knowledge of and ability to:
• #311 Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients,
patients’ families, colleagues, allied health professionals and other staff
with whom physicians must exchange information in carrying out their
responsibilities.
• #413 Filter, evaluate, and reconcile information, demonstrating the
following:
• a. Knowledge of the factors that influence the accuracy and validity of information
in general.
• b. Ability to discriminate between types of information sources in terms of their
currency, format (for example a review vs. an original article), authority, relevance,
and availability.
• c. Ability to weigh conflicting information from several sources and reconcile the
differences.
• d. Ability to critically review a published research report.
• e. Knowledge of copyright and intellectual property issues, especially with regard
to materials that are retrieved electronically.

Abstract
• An Abstract is a brief summary of a
research article, thesis, case.…quickly
allowing the reader to ascertain the
purpose.
• An abstract is used as the basis for
selecting research proposed for
presentation
