Mise en scene within my short film
1. The Family Photo
The family photo prop remains on the protagonist’s person at all times and acts as a
reminder to the protagonist of the reason why he is attempting to survive in the
wild on his own in the first place. This prop also acts as a reminder to the audience
about the age of the protagonist and how futile it is for him to attempt to survive
on his own.
The family photo also has strong connotations to society and the protagonists
misplacement within it as shown by his literal misplacement within the frame of the
picture, obviously signifying his lack of importance within his family and therefore
society . This lack of cohesion within his own family could also be interpreted as his
alienation from the rest of society and therefore a reason is formed for the
protagonist to attempt to survive in the wild on his own.
2. The Equipment
Due to the fact that the protagonist’s equipment is very similar in it’s connotations I will be
talking about it as two half's, useful and non-useful.
Useful:
The useful equipment that the protagonist will be carrying will consist of items such as a
water flask, rope, and a torch. I have labelled these useful due to the way in which they all
demonstrate the actual preparation that the protagonist has taken before attempting to
survive in the wild. These all connote the protagonist’s ability to recognise what is useful and
what is not which plays into the fact that the protagonist’s character has watched a lot of
‘Bear Grylls’ and so will therefore have a very basic understanding as to what is needed
when surviving in the wild.
Non-useful:
The items such as the magnifying glass, fishing hook attached to a penknife and the yo-yo all
demonstrate the way in which the protagonist is unprepared and hasn’t thought through
entirely what he will need when surviving in the wild. These items connote to the audience
the stupidity of the protagonist and ultimately set up the inevitable downfall of the
protagonist.
3. The ‘Bush Hat.’
The ‘bush hat’ will be the one prop that is taken through to the end with the protagonist.
This will be due to its sentimental value and the way in which the protagonist has had it
since he was a child. This will be demonstrated through the protagonist exclaiming this fact
to the camera. The protagonist will also constantly make references to how the hat has been
in his family for years and that he has a special bond with his hat that only he understands.
The hat therefore will remain on the protagonist’s person all throughout the short film until
right at the end where it will be lost. This is to connote the loss of his sanity and any
connection that he had to the outside world. His hat therefore becomes a metaphor for the
protagonist’s sanity with it becoming more and more degraded as the protagonist slowly
starts to loose stability of mind.
