Assignment 1: Write a 500 written analysis of representation of age and social
class. You must make reference to the micro areas of Mise en scene and camera,
using appropriate terminology.
The sitcom, which we watched, was “People just do nothing”. The episode
is called “The Godfather”. This sitcom is a mockumentary. It has 6 main characters
that live in the south. Grindah has a girlfriend called Michelle and they both have
a daughter named Angel. This sitcom revolves around Angel’s christening and
whom Grindah decides to be godfather. Other characters include Beats, Decoy
and Steves who are friends of Grindah. The narrative is the lead up to Angel’s
christening and the preparation for the day. Grindah’s friends also seem to be
battling over who will be the Godfather of Angel. Another character introduced
into this sitcom is Chabuddy who makes the t-shirts forthe christening. After days
of preparation, the day arrives. Grindah seems to be quite rowdy and not
respectful of the church. The other characters seem to think this is normal
behaviour but the priest seems disgusted with the actions of Grindah and the
guests. Ultimately Grindah announces himself as Godfather. After the ceremony,
they go back to Grindah’s home and celebrate the christening of Angel with
alcoholic beverages.
At the start of the sitcom, it uses certain camera shots such as high and low angels
to represent the high-rise flats in the council estate where Grindah lives. This is
used to represent how big these flats are and maybe to convey where the sitcom
is set. In addition, an establishing shot is used to establish where the sitcomis set
and what the area is like. From this, I get the sense that these people are in a low
social class, as the area looks quite rough. Throughout the sitcom, a steadicam is

used to follow the characters. This gives off the idea that this is actually a
documentary and adds to the realism that these characters and being followed
doing their everyday things. While the characters and interacting with one
another, over shoulder shots, two shots and an eyeline match is used. This is used
to reinforce how these characters communicate with one another so the viewer
gets a grasp of what they’re like as people and this add to character development.
Also, it adds to the professionalism of this sitcom as if eyeline match wasn’t used
it would look very amateur. Different shots such as long shot close up and
medium close up are used to represent the characters different emotions. This
gives us a clear view of how the character is feeling through their stance,
movement and facial expressions.
Mise en scene is also used in this sitcom to add to the realism to this
mockumentary. The setting is in a run down area of London with council flats. This
gives us the idea that the characters live in a run-down area and gives the
impression that they’re quite scruffy and rough. The costumes and makeup used
make these characters look like a stereotypical chav. They’re wearing tracksuits
and trainers in which you would associate with a chav. This stereotype is used to
represent the characteristics of Grindah and his friends and give the viewer an
immediate impression of what they’re like. Furthermore, these characters are all
presented in a way, which makes them seem uneducated. The characters also
pronounce words wrong and have certain views, which could be deemed as
stupid. For example: Michelle and Grindah think that if Angel is christened she will
automatically go to heaven no matter what she does in life. It is also conveyed
that Michele only has a GCSE in art, which once again relates to the characters
being portrayed as stupid. The different cultures within this sitcom are also
portrayed. There is a scene when Michelle and Chabuddy are speaking and
Michelle doesn’t understand what he’s saying. This highlights the different
cultures within this sitcom and how they interact with eachother. Additionally,
the characters all speak to each other using dialect fromthe south. It conveys
different cultures from how the North speaks and slang they use to the slang used
down South. They also use informal language when speaking which links to how
they speak to eachother and also how they’re uneducated. Drug use is also
represented in this sitcom. This is represented to get a clear view of the
characters and what their morals are as taking drugs is their lifestyle and seem as
the norm. Different social classes are too signified within the sitcom. Grindah and
his friends are regarded as being a low social class whereas the priest and the
piano player are deemed to be in high social classes and seem offended with

Grindah’s behaviour because that’s not how they were brought up to act. There
are certain roles also within this sitcom. Michelle is seen as a motherly role as she
always mothers Angel and seems to make the effort with her. This is also a
stereotypical view that mothers should be the one to look after the children.
Grindah is in a role of dominance, as he seems to be the leader of the group, as all
of the other characters seem to look up to him and take order. An example of this
is when Chabuddy is asked to make another set of t-shits because Grindah wasn’t
happy with the ones he already produced.
To summarise, this sitcom is represented in a way to make the characters look like
a low social class. To accomplish this, they used certain establishing shots and
costumes to represent the characters in a particular way. The shots used in this
mockumentary also add to the characters personality as they use certain shots to
portray certain characteristics of these characters and how they interact.
