Roll Deep Green Light Music Video Analysis Under 40 Characters
1. Roll Deep – Green light
Analysis of music videos
2. Video analysis
For my second music video, I decided to watch
Roll Deep’s Green Light.
3. Genre
The genre of Green Light is grime/pop.
It meets the expectations of this genre by
involving good looking females and a very
expensive car.
I wouldn’t say that this video is limited to a certain
demographic, as there is nothing in it that would
prevent any specific social group from watching it.
4. Audience
I believe that the audience for this video would be
16-24. There would be no tied down racial group
for this video as it involves various ethnicity’s.
It shows a good time to the audience, a group of
male friends with a bunch of sexy females.
5. Narrative
There is only one storyline in this video, therefore
it is linear. The storyline consists of singing in
front of colour backgrounds. As the song is called
Green Light, the producer Rock Jacobs wanted to
created the backgrounds in a sort of traffic light
fashion, and so as they go through the video, it
starts off with red, then goes to amber, then
green. This creates an educational effect on the
viewer.
The theme is girls and money in this video.
6. Representation
Star image is constructed as soon as the video
begins. The head of Roll Deep appears in a
Ferrari whereas all the others do not, this shows
an image he is trying to portray.
Male gaze is used in this video by involving sexy
girls in it. This is in order to sell to males. Also, to
emphasise the voyeuristic message the females
are dressed up in tight, little skirts.
Not many stereotypes are used.
7. Characteristics
Colour is emphasised in this video along with the
narrative of traffic lights. To accompany this, there
is an expensive sports car at the start. This adds
to the theme of a green light. Furthermore, there
are very current clothing such as snapbacks
which are currently in fashion.
Visual/lyrics
A lot of the time they say the words ‘green light’
there is a traffic light next to them. Also, at the
beginning, Wiley is in a red car in front of a
reddish background, therefore insinuating a red
light. This is why the car is stationary.
8. Visuals/Music
When the beat gets quicker (in the chorus) the
camera begins to bounce as if it is bouncing with
the music. Furthermore, when the beat is slower,
there are a lot more close ups.
Artist
The artists are shown in the video and there are a
lot of close ups showing them in it. Their motif is
them standing all together whilst the song is
playing, as I have recognised this in their other
videos.
9. Intertexuality
Shows the Ferrari logo in the video and also
shows traffic lights.
Voyeurism
The voyeuristic message is heavily emphasised
within this video. Girls are used as models to
dance around in it, they have no impact on the
storyline yet Roll Deep just want good looking
females in their videos to show success and to
sell their product.
