2. Hollywood Undead
Hollywood Undead are the most popular rap rock groups of modern
time with countless hits. Often being at the forefront of controversy
due to the gang like nature they do often get in trouble, however they
do produce some more sentimental hits from time to time such as
bullet and gravity.
3. Genre characteristics
Well the references to rap are their through out the scene of them
drinking at the bar and the constant references back to alcohol their
also smoking which subtly pulls across the rap more. Also
their bandana's seen in the video is a clearly a rap characteristic and
Charlie sheen capitalizes this by incorporating it in his stage
outfit. There are some alternative references through the
skateboarding which is something you would find in alternative
video's another rock characteristic is the performance at the end in
front of crowds, this is something that rock video's try to show a lot in
their video. Hollywood do a very good job of trying to merge both.
4. Mise-en-scene
It looks to shot California you see them making their masks which is a
key symbol of band ands their most significant icon. The skateboards,
driving jumping to the concert and the studio performance blends the
both their childhood and what is now their fame. The graffiti and liquor
bottles. It seems like a lot of props but it is doable.
5. Video and lyric links
There are so many references to Hollywood undead growing up
and how they made it as Hollywood undead. Selling CD on the street
and the making of their iconic masks. This videos essentially sums up
their childhood and rise to fame so there is so many links surrou8nding
their youth. "southern california days" is said throughout and there are
constant Cali refernces.
6. Narrative
The narrative is for them growing up and it enforces this in everyway
possible, through the lyrics, mise-en-scene and the actual content of
the video. The constant reference back to their youth, growing up and
trying to make, then to the end to the spectrum where they have made
it.
7. Representation of the artist
This shows the typical rap/rock representation. Them drinking, casual
clothes just living life just as many artist of this genre do. The only
difference is the masks, the masks became a key symbolism of the
band. They said they don’t sound like anyone else so they don’t want to
look like anyone else and hence the masks coming into the existence.
8. Colour
Its is black and white which gives old age look which suits the narrative
of the music because its all about looking back and the video does
through the black and white filter. Its very effective it gives it a nostalgic
look almost stepping back through time.
9. Intertextual References
The video constantly refers back their memories and you constantly get
the flashes of their past. They say they were happy before their fame
and the video cuts between their youth and them preforming showing
the narrative on each side of the spectrum of the song. There is quite
an obvious reference to the song with lyrics on drinking and then the
showing of alcohol.
