Elements of a Myth
State Standard:
Reading 3.4
Read for literary experience in a
variety of genres.
Content Objective
The student will be able to read
mythology and describe its
common elements.
OK Students, now it’s your
turn to say the objective. Here
we go……
“I will be able to read mythology
and describe and identify its
elements.”
Now it’s time to examine the
elements of a myth!
• Larger than
life
characters
include
gods,
talking
animals,
and/or
monsters
• The setting is
usually long
ago and far
away
• There is a
conflict
between gods
and humans,
among gods,
or among
animals.
• The myth may
explain a
natural
phenomenon
or an aspect of
human nature.
• Often a myth
involves a
journey
Now let’s examine a Greek myth
Read Arachne the Weaver
Let’s discuss how many
elements we found in Arachne
the Weaver.
• Turn to your elbow partner, and discuss
the elements of a myth you found.
• With a highlighter, highlight the elements.
Let’s Summarize!
• Greek myths include either all or some of the
following elements:
1.) Larger than life characters
2.) A conflict between gods and
humans or among gods
3. The setting is a long time ago.
4. They explain a natural phenomenon.
5. They involve a log journey.
Check For Understanding
• Name one element of
a myth.
• Compare how a myth
is different from other
genres we have
studied.
• What other natural
occurrences might a
myth try to explain?
• Why would the
ancient Greeks use
stories to explain
natural phenomenon?
• If you were an ancient
Greek, how might you
try to explain an
earthquake?
Now it’s your turn!
• Read the Greek myth “Medusa and
Athena
• Highlight the elements you find
• Write a complete paragraph comparing
and contrasting the two myths.
When writing your compare and
contrast paragraph consider the
following sentence starters.
• They are different because………
• _____ tells about ______, but ______ tells
about………
• ______ and ______ are similar in that they
both…….
Good Luck and Good Writing!!
That concludes our
lesson!
