Saw Poster Analysis
1.
2. This poster for the 2004 film Saw is very
conventional for its horror aspects and has a
lingering effect in people that have viewed it’s
memory. The ways in which it is memorable is
the writing, the main image and the colour
scheme.
3. MAIN IMAGE
The main image of the poster is a foot that
has been removed from the rest of the
leg. The foot having been removed
connotes that there is an air of mystery
and is also unnerving and causing
uneasiness for viewers who are easily
disturbed by these sort of images. The
colour scheme of the main image is a
dark greenish/ black colour and a dark
red/crimson colour for the blood. The
colour scheme of the foot shows that it is
rotting or on the verge of rotting. Rotting
also connotes the resulting effects of
death. The blood having turned a crimson
colour shows that the blood has been
there a long time.
4. WRITING DESIGN
The design of the main title for Saw is a dark
coloured text that looks ominous and is
the main font that is used throughout the
franchise for the pure reason that it does
create a longing memorable feel that
people can familiarise themselves with it.
The colour of the writing a very blackishred with a faint reddish outline to it, to
make it stand out further from the
background. The S of it seems to either
be a smaller font sized capital S or in fact
a lowercase S, as it is the same size as
the A. The W on the other hand is a large
and elongated, maybe the extension of it
is to signify the teeth of a saw blade, or
just to make it appear out of the ordinary
5. SUB-IMAGE
The “sub-image” of the poster is
that of a saw blade, either
slightly rusted on one side, or
the splattering of blood that
has turned black over time.
This create the theme that is
continued by the name of the
film and the unknown cause of
the sawn off foot. As the blood
on the saw blade could be a
link to the foot, from viewing at
the poster this could be the
only link made. With the saw
blade on the top section of the
poster it also appears as if it’s
in a guillotine position, poised
ready to dismember a victim.
6. ADDITIONAL NOTES
The bottom section of the poster
that is usually reserved for the
notes at that are conventionally
placed here leads with a
tagline at the top stating
“EVERY PUZZLE HAS ITS
PIECES” giving the film a
tagline and again creating an
air of mystery. The directing/
producing/ acting etc credits
are a similar colour scheme to
the background, maybe this is
in place so that it would be
described in such a way so that
the viewers won’t notice it and
concentrate on that more than
the actual body of the poster. It
is unknown. But the effect that
this has is that it does appear a
bit invisible.
7. POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES OF THE POSTER
Positives
Negatives
Doesn’t give away too much:
Actors, scenes, locations etc
Maybe seen as bland and
simplistic
Creates an uneasiness with the
image, maybe seen as a great
marketing ploy for horror fans
Creates an uneasiness with the
image, people may avoid watching
the film
Colour scheme is effective for how
simplistic it is
Does not show any protagonist/
antagonist. People may not know
anything about it from the poster.
Does not show any protagonist/
antagonist. This leaves viewers
with a blind anticipation
Not much is known from the
poster.
