1. Camerawork:The opening
scene of the trailer shows a
weather shot of the sun setting.
This is the conventional, peaceful
start to many Horror movie trailers
as it shows the innocence of the
start of the movie.
The next scene is a long shot of a
family of three, a mother, father and
daughter, with the sun setting in the
background of the shot and the
family walking towards it. Both these
camera shots establish the
innocence at the start of the trailer.
The next scene is a mid-long shot of
protagonist's family, and then it
quickly cuts to a close up of both the
parents of the family,
the protagonist and his wife as they
are enjoying their evening meal.

2. Another establishing shot is used
when an aerial shot of a
neighbourhood in an innocent light is
shown to establish the location of
which this movie will be set in.
The shots of the “Purge Feed”,
which look like they’re from a
CCTV camera, are all longshots of
the destruction and mayhem that
occurs because of The Purge.
Many more establishing shots are
used, to show the house arming it’sdefences and to show the
emptiness of the roads.
The tilted angle close up of, who I assume is, the main antagonist of
the movie, is an effective shot as it has his face clear and showing the
audience who the main antagonist is
without hiding it as many trailers tend
to do. Also the sides of the shot are
blacked out so you cannot see the
surroundings clearly and the face of
the female in the background.
Editing: The editing for the trailer at first is slow paced editing,
into fading out and then once the action starts the editing becomes
fast paced and this is conventional of the horror genre, particularly
the trailers of such films as it shows violence and action in a quick,
fast way.
Sound: The sound in the trailer at first is all peaceful ambient

3. sound. Non-digetic doorbell sounds are then heard and the sound of
violence too.
Music is added later, during the disequilibrium, this is conventional
with some horror trailers as it has peaceful music in place while ultra
violence scenes are present, to show the contrast during the scenes.
Mise-en-scene: The mise-en-scene used in the trailer of The
Purge, in terms of costumes, is that that the main family,
the protagonist and family. Is that the protagonist is wearing a suit,
without the tie. His wife is wearing a black top with a beige cardigan.
Their children are wearing what looks like it could be a school
uniform, white shirt and black trousers for the son and a white
blouse, black and blue striped tie and a black skirt for the daughter.
These clothing connote that they are your everyday ‘well-off’
American family. Their house looks very nice, exterior and interior
and is designed well to suit their lifestyle.

4. The costume of the man who
seeks refuge in the house, the
‘target’ for the antagonist’s
Purge this year, is wearing a
greenish coloured jacket and
jeans by the look of it. His jacket
is also ripped on the back and he looks as though he’s bleeding
and/or is really sweaty.
The antagonist and his
entourage are all wearing nice,
fancy clothes, he in particular is
wearing a suit and the woman in
the background of the security
camera scene is wearing a white
dress. They all also wear masks
of people who are all smiling and this is conventional of the horror
genre as masked people are a common object of fear in such movie
like I.T, Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. This also
helps the viewer of the trailer and not the movie as it doesn’t give
away too much details of the character and what they actually look
like.
