2. This first still is a long shot to show all the members of the
family in one scene to show how happy and peaceful they
are, the equilibrium of the trailer. It is sort of in the
perspective of what the head of the table would see, just
in order to see all of the family in their sight.
The effect that this part of the trailer has is that it makes
the audience feel that there is a happy moment where all
seems well and normal within this movie, while its all
tranquil.
3. This next still image is a two-shot which shows one of the three
antagonists peering at an unsuspecting member of the family
through a window. The effect of this shot is that it creates a sense
of fear and tension, as we now know the antagonists, wearing the
masks are stalking this family and now we know what they look like
too. This is the implementation of terror rather than horror as it is
not physically there yet, but it is in fact impending.
4. This next still shows one member of the family who has just been shot
in the head by a crossbow bolt and the other members of the in shock
of the situation. The effect that this causes is that it brings in the first
real scenes of violence and the faces and emotion of the others
witnessing these events are shocked and fearful, also gives the
audience that feeling too. This is the disequilibrium of the trailer as it
makes the audience realise there is a violent moment and this brings in
the horror element to the scene.
5. This next still is an establishing shot of the house of which the event
of this movie take place. In the order of the trailer this still takes
place immediately after the electric is turned off, causing fear and
caution throughout the household. This shot implies that the family
who live in the house are now plunged into the actualisation of
danger. The danger is even more enforced by that it is literally pitch
black and danger is usually signified by these dark elements.
6. This low angled shot and maybe a point of view shot from
one the victims of this attack from one of the antagonist is
a shot that asserts dominance in the scene, making the
audience know who is in control and superior in the movie.
The effect of this is that with the masked antagonist it may
create a uneasy feeling for the audience because masked
antagonists always create fear. The mask signifies fear as
in many horror films, and other genres for that matter use
masks to create fear, the fear of the unknown enemy.
7. This two-shot is a still of a dead member of the family (left) and one of the
antagonists. This shot is probably a point of view shot of what one of the
other members of the family will see and that would create fear and
frighten them, as it probably would the audience. The lighting is effective
too as on the left side, which includes the dead member is lit well by a
lamp and the other side, the one with the antagonist is dark. The light
signifies innocence and purity, because to our knowledge the family
members are innocent and they were viciously attacked. The dark side
surrounding the antagonist shows how evil he is and the dark side of him.
8. This POV shot shows the eye line of one of the antagonists as they
are looking down the crosshairs of a crossbow, about to shoot one
of the family members. The intension of this shot, I think, is show the
audience what weapon they are using, in case there was any
confusion. The intention too is also to create a form of fear and
tension as we are expecting a bolt to be fired from said crossbow,
but evidently it is not, thus alluding the tension.
