2. RULES IN ORDER OF OPERATIONS
• When addition and subtraction are used in a row, follow
the order of operations from left to right.
Examples:
28 + 16 – 5 120 – 36 + 7
44 – 5 84 + 7
39 91
3. • When multiplication and division are used in a row, follow the
order of operations from left to right.
Examples:
36 ÷ 9 x 5 12 x 6 ÷ 8
4 x 5 72 ÷ 8
20 9
RULES IN ORDER OF OPERATIONS
4. • Multiplication and division are performed first or before addition
and subtraction or MDAS
Examples:
36 x 3 + 8 ÷ 4 – 2 48 – 12 x 3 + 10 ÷ 5
108 + 8 ÷ 4 – 2 48 – 36 + 10 ÷ 5
108 + 2 – 2 48 – 36 + 2
110 – 2 12 + 2
108 14
RULES IN ORDER OF OPERATIONS
5. • When solving for the answer in the mathematical sentence
involving parentheses and all four operations, use PMDAS rule
(Parentheses, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction)
Example:
48 x (7 + 5 ) ÷ 12 + ( 6 – 2 )
48 x 12 ÷ 12 + 4
576 ÷ 12 + 4
48 + 4
52
