• The statement of equality containing a variable is called equation

Linear Equation
• Linear equation is an equation in which maximum power of a variable
is 1 .
3x +5 =1

3a4+1=2
But 8x2 + 7 = 6 is not a linear equation because its power is not 1.

• An equation that involves only one variable.

Conversion of a statement to an equation
• The sum of 5 times of x and 7 times of y is 60
• A number is exceeds 6 by 4.
Conversion of a statement to an Equation
• The number is 5 more than 12
• One third of a number a is 6 more than 5.

Practical application
• The length of a rectangle is 6m less than three times its breadth. Find the dimensions of the rectangle it its
perimeter is 148m.
solution : let us assume the breadth of the rectangle to be 𝑥
the length of rectangle = 3𝑥 − 6
the perimeter of a rectangle = 148m
2( length + breadth ) = 148
2 (3𝑥 − 6 + 𝑥) = 148
2(4𝑥 − 6) = 148
(4𝑥 − 6) =

greatest part is four times the smaller part.
• Solution: let the smaller part be x .

• One number is 4 less than times another number, if a sum is
increased by 5 ,the result is 25. find both the number.
