Overseas/Overnight Markets
 U.S. stock index futures fell, taking a cue from European and Asian
markets, as worries over global growth prospects and the outcome of
Greece’s private-sector bond swap later this week weigh on sentiment.
There is no U.S. economic data on the docket today.
 European stocks dropped, with banks and resource stocks among the
`largest detractors. A report released this morning showed a 0.3% Q/Q
contraction in the euro-area economy in Q4, confirming an initial estimate
published on February 15. Large declines in investment, exports and
consumer spending were to blame for the overall GDP contraction. Also
weighing on investors was a memo from the Institute of International
Finance that warned that a disorderly default would cause the euro zone
more than 1 trillion euros ($1.36 trillion) in damage, Reuters reported. The
report also stated that a default would likely force Italy and Spain to seek
aid to prevent being engulfed in the region’s debt crisis.
 Private investors that have declared their participation in Greece’s debt
restructuring hold about 20% of the bonds involved in a swap, the creditors’
stering committee said yesterday. The goal of the swap, which runs
through March 8, is to reduce the amount of privately-held Greek debt by
53.5% and help secure Greece’s second rescue package.
 Asian stocks fell sharply, with miners among the top declines, following
global markets lower on growth concerns. The Hang Seng shed 2.2%,
while the Shanghai Composite fell 1.4%. Japan’s Nikkei gave up a more
modest 0.6%.
North American Market Highlights & Headlines
 Aecon Group Inc. (ARE-T) reported a 143% increase in quarterly earnings
on Monday as margins improved on lower costs. Aecon reported EPS of
$0.49, up from $0.20 a year ago. Revenue in the quarter was $790 million,
down from $841 million, and well shy of the $859 million consensus
estimate. Aecon's backlog stood at $2.39 billion at December 31, 2011.

Overseas and Overnight Markets
 U.S. stock index futures are pointing to a lower opening ahead of the Federal Reserve's
latest monetary policy decision which is due to be released at 2 pm ET. While most
economists expect rates to be unchanged, investors will be analyzing the Fed's
statement for further signaling of a potential increase in the rates next month.
 Asian markets mostly fell on Wednesday in a thin trading session with markets in Japan,
Hong Kong and South Korea closed for public holidays. In China, the Shanghai
Composite Index shed 0.3%, while in Australia the ASX200 Index fell 1.0% amid
declines in banking and some resources shares.
 European stocks are trading in negative territory with the basic resources sector leading
the decline amid a slide in metal prices. On the data front, eurozone’s gross domestic
product rose by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2017, in line with analysts’ expectations.
Company Headlines
 Loblaw Cos Ltd (L-T) posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit as the company
kept a tight lid on expenses and attracted more customers to its stores with discounts.
Net earnings available to common shareholders rose to $230 million, or $0.57 per share,
in the first quarter ended March 25, from $193 million, or $0.47 per share, a year earlier.
Excluding items, the company earned $0.90 per share, beating the average estimate of
$0.87 per share.
 Torstar Corp (TS.B-T) reported a bigger-than-expected loss, as growth in some of its
digital ventures failed to offset a decline in print advertising. Torstar said print advertising
revenue fell 19% in the first quarter ended March 31. Revenue from digital ventures
dipped 4%, but Torstar said digital revenue growth was "strong" its majority-owned
VerticalScope unit and community websites in its Metroland Media business. Torstar
said net loss attributable to shareholders narrowed to $24.4 million or $0.30 per share,
from $53.5 million, or $0.66 per share, a year earlier. Excluding items, the company lost
$0.22 per share, missing analysts' average estimate of $0.13 per share according to
Thomson Reuters.
 Apple Inc (AAPL-Q) reported a surprise fall in iPhone sales for its second quarter,
indicating that customers may have held back purchases in anticipation of the 10th-
anniversary edition of the company's most important product later this year. Apple sold
50.76 million iPhones in its fiscal second quarter ended April 1, down from 51.19 million
a year earlier. For the second quarter, the company's net income rose to US$11.03
billion, or US$2.10 per share, compared with US$10.52 billion, or US$1.90 per share, a
year earlier. Analysts on average had expected US$2.02 per share, according to
Thomson Reuters.

Before the Open May 3 2017

  • 1.  bbbsb Overseas/Overnight Markets  U.S. stock index futures fell, taking a cue from European and Asian markets, as worries over global growth prospects and the outcome of Greece’s private-sector bond swap later this week weigh on sentiment. There is no U.S. economic data on the docket today.  European stocks dropped, with banks and resource stocks among the `largest detractors. A report released this morning showed a 0.3% Q/Q contraction in the euro-area economy in Q4, confirming an initial estimate published on February 15. Large declines in investment, exports and consumer spending were to blame for the overall GDP contraction. Also weighing on investors was a memo from the Institute of International Finance that warned that a disorderly default would cause the euro zone more than 1 trillion euros ($1.36 trillion) in damage, Reuters reported. The report also stated that a default would likely force Italy and Spain to seek aid to prevent being engulfed in the region’s debt crisis.  Private investors that have declared their participation in Greece’s debt restructuring hold about 20% of the bonds involved in a swap, the creditors’ stering committee said yesterday. The goal of the swap, which runs through March 8, is to reduce the amount of privately-held Greek debt by 53.5% and help secure Greece’s second rescue package.  Asian stocks fell sharply, with miners among the top declines, following global markets lower on growth concerns. The Hang Seng shed 2.2%, while the Shanghai Composite fell 1.4%. Japan’s Nikkei gave up a more modest 0.6%. North American Market Highlights & Headlines  Aecon Group Inc. (ARE-T) reported a 143% increase in quarterly earnings on Monday as margins improved on lower costs. Aecon reported EPS of $0.49, up from $0.20 a year ago. Revenue in the quarter was $790 million, down from $841 million, and well shy of the $859 million consensus estimate. Aecon's backlog stood at $2.39 billion at December 31, 2011. Overseas and Overnight Markets  U.S. stock index futures are pointing to a lower opening ahead of the Federal Reserve's latest monetary policy decision which is due to be released at 2 pm ET. While most economists expect rates to be unchanged, investors will be analyzing the Fed's statement for further signaling of a potential increase in the rates next month.  Asian markets mostly fell on Wednesday in a thin trading session with markets in Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea closed for public holidays. In China, the Shanghai Composite Index shed 0.3%, while in Australia the ASX200 Index fell 1.0% amid declines in banking and some resources shares.  European stocks are trading in negative territory with the basic resources sector leading the decline amid a slide in metal prices. On the data front, eurozone’s gross domestic product rose by 0.5% in the first quarter of 2017, in line with analysts’ expectations. Company Headlines  Loblaw Cos Ltd (L-T) posted a higher-than-expected quarterly profit as the company kept a tight lid on expenses and attracted more customers to its stores with discounts. Net earnings available to common shareholders rose to $230 million, or $0.57 per share, in the first quarter ended March 25, from $193 million, or $0.47 per share, a year earlier. Excluding items, the company earned $0.90 per share, beating the average estimate of $0.87 per share.  Torstar Corp (TS.B-T) reported a bigger-than-expected loss, as growth in some of its digital ventures failed to offset a decline in print advertising. Torstar said print advertising revenue fell 19% in the first quarter ended March 31. Revenue from digital ventures dipped 4%, but Torstar said digital revenue growth was "strong" its majority-owned VerticalScope unit and community websites in its Metroland Media business. Torstar said net loss attributable to shareholders narrowed to $24.4 million or $0.30 per share, from $53.5 million, or $0.66 per share, a year earlier. Excluding items, the company lost $0.22 per share, missing analysts' average estimate of $0.13 per share according to Thomson Reuters.  Apple Inc (AAPL-Q) reported a surprise fall in iPhone sales for its second quarter, indicating that customers may have held back purchases in anticipation of the 10th- anniversary edition of the company's most important product later this year. Apple sold 50.76 million iPhones in its fiscal second quarter ended April 1, down from 51.19 million a year earlier. For the second quarter, the company's net income rose to US$11.03 billion, or US$2.10 per share, compared with US$10.52 billion, or US$1.90 per share, a year earlier. Analysts on average had expected US$2.02 per share, according to Thomson Reuters.
