Overseas/Overnight Markets
U.S. stock index futures fell, taking a cue from European and Asian
markets, as worries over global growth prospects and the outcome of
Greece’s private-sector bond swap later this week weigh on sentiment.
There is no U.S. economic data on the docket today.
European stocks dropped, with banks and resource stocks among the
`largest detractors. A report released this morning showed a 0.3% Q/Q
contraction in the euro-area economy in Q4, confirming an initial estimate
published on February 15. Large declines in investment, exports and
consumer spending were to blame for the overall GDP contraction. Also
weighing on investors was a memo from the Institute of International
Finance that warned that a disorderly default would cause the euro zone
more than 1 trillion euros ($1.36 trillion) in damage, Reuters reported. The
report also stated that a default would likely force Italy and Spain to seek
aid to prevent being engulfed in the region’s debt crisis.
Private investors that have declared their participation in Greece’s debt
restructuring hold about 20% of the bonds involved in a swap, the creditors’
stering committee said yesterday. The goal of the swap, which runs
through March 8, is to reduce the amount of privately-held Greek debt by
53.5% and help secure Greece’s second rescue package.
Asian stocks fell sharply, with miners among the top declines, following
global markets lower on growth concerns. The Hang Seng shed 2.2%,
while the Shanghai Composite fell 1.4%. Japan’s Nikkei gave up a more
modest 0.6%.
North American Market Highlights & Headlines

on Monday as margins improved on lower costs. Aecon reported EPS of
$0.49, up from $0.20 a year ago. Revenue in the quarter was $790 million,
down from $841 million, and well shy of the $859 million consensus
estimate. Aecon's backlog stood at $2.39 billion at December 31, 2011.

Overseas and Overnight Markets
In the U.S., Nasdaq futures pulled back almost half a percent Tuesday after Google
was hit with a record fine of $2.7 billion by European Union regulators. Dow and S&P
futures, meanwhile, pointed to a flat to slightly lower open as investors awaited data
and key remarks from leading Federal Reserve members including Chair Janet Yellen.
Markets in Asia closed mixed on Tuesday as traders watched for signals from central
bankers' speeches. The Nikkei 225 rose 0.36 percent, or 71.74 points, while Hong
Kong's Hang Seng Index gave up earlier gains to trade lower by 0.12 percent and the
Shanghai Composite closed up by 0.19 percent.
European markets were lower on Tuesday morning after the president of the European
Central Bank, Mario Draghi, defended the bank's loose monetary policy and said a
premature end to easing could lead to another recession. The pan-European Stoxx
600 was down 0.65 percent in early deals, with the majority of sectors and European
bourses trading in negative territory.
Company Headlines
Alphabet Inc.'s (GOOGL-Q) Google lost its biggest regulatory battle yet, getting a
record 2.4 billion-euro (US$2.7 billion) fine from European Union enforcers who say the
search-engine giant skewed results to thwart smaller shopping search services. Google
has 90 days to "stop its illegal conduct" and give equal treatment to rival price-
comparison services, according to a binding order from the European Commission on
Tuesday. It’s up to Google to choose how it does this and inform the EU of its plans
within 60 days.
Licensed marijuana company Canopy Growth Corp. (WEED-T) saw its patient base
double in its last fiscal year to more than 58,000 as it sold 203 per cent more product,
though the company posted a C$16.7-million net loss for the year, up from C$3.5-
million in 2016. For 2017’s fourth quarter, the company’s most recent, Canopy brought
in revenue of C$14.7-million, a 191-per-cent increase over a year earlier. But it
revealed a wider net loss for the quarter of $21.1-million, or 14 cents a share, versus
C$5.1-million or 5 cents the year prior.
International Business Machines Corp. (IBM-N) is building blockchain technology
that will be used by seven of Europe's largest banks, including HSBC and Rabobank,
to facilitate international trade for small and medium-size enterprises, the company said
on Tuesday. The project will mark one of the first real-world use cases of blockchain
technology in financial institutions. Seven banks — Deutsche Bank, HSBC, KBC,
Natixis, Rabobank, Societe Generale and Unicredit — are part of the consortium.
