Global Markets Lower Ahead of Key Central Bank Decisions

Overseas/Overnight Markets
U.S. stock index futures fell, taking a cue from European and Asian
markets, as worries over global growth prospects and the outcome of
Greece’s private-sector bond swap later this week weigh on sentiment.
There is no U.S. economic data on the docket today.
European stocks dropped, with banks and resource stocks among the
`largest detractors. A report released this morning showed a 0.3% Q/Q
contraction in the euro-area economy in Q4, confirming an initial estimate
published on February 15. Large declines in investment, exports and
consumer spending were to blame for the overall GDP contraction. Also
weighing on investors was a memo from the Institute of International
Finance that warned that a disorderly default would cause the euro zone
more than 1 trillion euros ($1.36 trillion) in damage, Reuters reported. The
report also stated that a default would likely force Italy and Spain to seek
aid to prevent being engulfed in the region’s debt crisis.
Private investors that have declared their participation in Greece’s debt
restructuring hold about 20% of the bonds involved in a swap, the creditors’
stering committee said yesterday. The goal of the swap, which runs
through March 8, is to reduce the amount of privately-held Greek debt by
53.5% and help secure Greece’s second rescue package.
Asian stocks fell sharply, with miners among the top declines, following
global markets lower on growth concerns. The Hang Seng shed 2.2%,
while the Shanghai Composite fell 1.4%. Japan’s Nikkei gave up a more
modest 0.6%.

down from $841 million, and well shy of the $859 million consensus
estimate. Aecon's backlog stood at $2.39 billion at December 31, 2011.

Overseas and Overnight Markets
U.S. stock index futures pointed to a lower open on Thursday as technology
stocks slumped for the second time this week. Dow futures fell 82 points, while
S&P and Nasdaq futures declined 15 points and 59 points, respectively.
Asian equities closed mostly lower on Thursday after the U.S. Federal Reserve
raised interest rates for the second time this year, as was widely expected by
markets. The Nikkei 225 edged lower by 0.26 percent, while the Hang Seng
Index moved lower by 1.20 percent and the Shanghai Composite edged higher
by 0.06 percent.
Bourses in Europe moved lower on Thursday as investors digested multiple
monetary policy decisions. The pan-European Stoxx 600 was 0.87 percent
lower with most sectors moving south. The FTSE 100 was down by 1.06
percent following the Bank of England's decision to keep its policy unchanged.
Company Headlines
Home Capital Group Inc. (HCG-T) agreed Wednesday to pay a total of
C$30.5 million to settle both OSC allegations of misleading disclosure and a
class-action lawsuit in a dual agreement that appears designed to help salvage
the troubled mortgage lender as a going concern or viable takeover target. In
the OSC settlement, the company agreed to pay an administrative penalty of
C$10 million.
Bank of America Corp (BAC-N) has begun laying off employees in its
operations and technology division, part of the second-largest U.S. bank's plan
to cut costs. The cuts come as Bank of America is aiming to cut costs in order
to boost financial targets Chief Executive Brian Moynihan has set. Although
Bank of America is also hiring, the employees that it is trying to reduce cost
more than those who are joining, Moynihan said at a conference last month.
Even as Wells Fargo & Co. (WFC-N) was reeling from a major scandal in its
consumer bank last year, officials in the company's mortgage business were
putting through unauthorized changes to home loans held by customers in
bankruptcy, a new class action and other lawsuits contend. Wells Fargo's
changes would extend the terms of borrowers' loans by decades, meaning
they would have monthly payments for far longer and would ultimately owe the
bank much more.
