2. WHY DO PROFESSORS MAKE YOU DO
THIS?
• The point of an annotated bibliography is to familiarize yourself, and your reader, with
the sources you’re building your argument around.
• You’re creating a resource for your reader:
-Maybe there’s a concept they don’t quite understand, or a source that is
particularly interesting to them- they can look at the bibliography and read your
notes on the subject.
4. RESEARCH
• Collecting 7 to 10 sources- three must be multimedia, two must be scholarly sources.
(If you’re getting stuck, please email me.)
• Hopefully much of this was completed in library week. If not, utilize the UI library
online database, or other search engines such as google scholar, YouTube, etc.
6. ANNOTATIONS
• Scholarly notes-
– You have to (or you should,) know your sources to cite them.
– These notes document and clarify your engagement with the source.
– Here’s some helpful tips from Cornell University…Annotations summarize the central theme
and scope of the book or article. Include one or more sentences that (a) evaluate the
authority or background of the author, (b) comment on the intended audience, (c) compare
or contrast this work with another you have cited, or (d) explain how this work illuminates
your bibliography topic. https://guides.library.cornell.edu/annotatedbibliography

7 .
• Utilize online resources.
• Citation machine is one.
• Often online scholarly sites, like
JSTOR or Wiley, offer citations
that can be copied.
• Word has a pretty good
reference program. Check all
these though, as often the cites
are not in MLA-8 format, but
still in MLA-7.

10. • The working draft is due Friday,
March 8th, by 11:30am. (IT’s on
the schedule.) There is no class
that day (happy spring break!),
so this is due instead of class.
This draft is only the research
and citations steps. Don’t add
notations (unless you’re ready
and really want too.)
11. FOR MONDAY’S HOMEWORK
due before class on Wednesday, March 6th, (11:3am)
I created a discussion board on bbLearn. Go to Unit 3- first link on the of the top of the
page labeled “Unit three multimedia sources discussion board.”
Please submit a link to your favorite multimedia source, and short (one or two sentences)
explanation of why you’re excited to use it.
See you all Wednesday!
