Fertile soil, level plains, easy passage across the mountains,
coal, iron, and other metals imbedded in the rocks, and
stimulating climate, all shower their blessings upon man.-

EARTH’S RESOURCES
These are features produced from the
physical history of the earth, or processes such as
exfoliation, erosion and sedimentation,
glaciation, karst or shoreline processes, seismic,
and volcanic activities.
1. PETROLEUM
Petroleum or crude oil is
one of Earth’s most
important natural
resources.
It is used to make fuel,
plastics, industrial
chemicals, and medicines.

Refining means separating petroleum from
the many compounds present in it.
The various components of crude oil are
separated from each other through a process
known as fractional distillation.
Since there are no known large deposits of
petroleum in the Philippines, we import crude
oil and other petroleum products. Because
importation is expensive and oil reserves are
non-renewable, we must conserve electricity.
2. COAL
It is formed by the decomposition of dead
plants buried and compacted beneath the
Earth’s surface over thousands of years.
The different compounds in coal can be
separated by a process called Destructive
Distillation.

3. MINERALS
These are naturally formed substances.
Their atoms and molecules are arranged
in definite, orderly patterns called
crystals.
Many minerals are made into jewelry.
The beautiful and highly treasured of
these crystals are called gems.
 Rocks are known to be aggregates of
minerals. Generally, rocks contain two or
more minerals.
Ores are aggregates of economically
important minerals.
The preferred metallic element is
extracted from the ore by various
processes such as smelting, roasting, or
leaching.

4. ROCKS
These make up the outermost layer of the
lithosphere. Both fossil fuels and minerals
are found in rocks.
These are used as building materials such
as granite and volcanic tuff are used as
building materials.
5. SOIL
It is an important resource. It is the
material where plants grow.
It contains various nutrients that plants
need in order to live.
Soil contains rock particles that anchor
the plant.
The most common use of plants is for
construction.
Plants also provide cellulose fibers for
threads.

ACACIA
Plants also provide cellulose fibers for
threads.
Soft fibers are extracted from the bark of the
stalk of ramie. Hard fibers such as Manila
Hemp are collected from the leaf stalks of
abaca. Short fibers such as cotton and kapok
are used for threads and pillow paddings.

Natural dyes can be extracted from the
turmeric rhizomes or the marigold flowers.
Some seaweeds are source of
CARRAGEENAN, a substance used to
thicken ice cream and milkshakes and to
weave surgical threads.
AGAR, a gelatinous substance like aligns,
used to make paint and dyes, comes from
seaweeds.
Seawater is a mixture. One of the substances
it contains is SALT.
Technology has given us devices that
can separate ocean water from the
dissolved minerals it contains. This is
done through DESALINATION.
Another technology that make ocean
water a major source of hydrogen. Used
as fuel, hydrogen produces very little
pollution. This can be done through the
process of ELECTROLYSIS.
How can water be
turned into fuel?

One gas found in the air that is used in
industry is nitrogen.
Nitrogen is used in many industries because
it does not readily react chemically with
metals and other materials.
Nitrogen is also used as a protective coat for
welding metal parts.
Oxygen molecule is used to speed up the
process of purifying steel.
Another form of oxygen is made up of
three oxygen atoms and is called
OZONE.
Use of ozone:
(a) ozone absorbs the harmful UV rays
emitted by the sun
(b) ozone is used in food preservation
because it can extend the storage life of
food
(c) control pathogens and prolong the
ripening of fruits and vegetables.
Everything in the environment that humans
use is natural resource. It may be the air we
breathe, the soil we till, or the water we drink.
Resources may be grouped into renewable
and non-renewable resources.
