Introduction
This Insights Discovery profile is based on Jessica Stemen’s responses to the Insights
Preference Evaluator which was completed on 10 October 2013.
The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocrates
identified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built around
the model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This model
was published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings.
Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work in
understanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to the
present day.
Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understanding
and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths and
weaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help them
to better respond to the demands of their environment.
Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. It
reports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or delete
any statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends to identify
whether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you.
Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and take
action. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them on
areas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth personally
and interpersonally.

Overview
These statements provide a broad understanding of Jessica’s work style. Use this section to gain
a better understanding of her approaches to her activities, relationships and decisions.
Personal Style
Both alert and outspoken, Jessica can see the fatal flaw in a proposal or position but will often
argue (and often enjoys arguing) on either side of an issue from a position of “devils advocate”.
Articulate and thinking, she tends to be matter-of-fact and practical. She likes a fast pace and is
adept at using functional devices and procedures. Jessica likes working where she can achieve
immediate, visible and tangible results. She exhibits high standards of performance and she will
not necessarily accept critical observations of her work. Jessica likes to make things happen and
drive everything around her.
She is good at getting things done and does so in a very assertive way. She sees herself as
having rigorous standards that typically take precedence over her own and others' personal
needs. Hard work, busy schedules and merit-based remuneration are hallmarks of the way
Jessica prefers to work. She tends to appreciate tradition and is interested in maintaining
established rules and procedures. She is often more interested in “real things” than intangibles,
such as abstract ideas and theories.
At her best, she is responsible, industrious, decisive and energetic. She feels more secure when
she can control a situation by ensuring other people conform to her thinking. She is keen to pick
out logical inconsistencies. Jessica is a pragmatic individual who can be as tough as the situation
warrants. She likes to have control of most situations and can speak out clearly and forcibly
when she sees the need to do so.
By slowing down occasionally she is more able to gather relevant data and consider both the
practical and personal ramifications of her actions. Eager to add to her knowledge, Jessica is
passionate about researching significant new subjects that capture her interest. Jessica is a
resourceful, action-oriented person who lives for the future by making every moment count. She
aims to live by her rules and believes that everyone else should do too! Jessica's ability to focus
on task suggests that she is a good problem solver.
She is seen as a powerful leader as she is able to think on her feet. To manage her tensions, she
needs to be constantly in control and get things done without wasting time. She is quick to spot
opportunities and see how they can be turned to her advantage. Because she lives by principles
and rules, Jessica is very consistent and dependable. Jessica systematically sets about
achieving her scheduled goals on time in an efficient and effective manner. She tends to be
realistic and matter-of-fact about work issues.
Interacting with Others
Jessica is alert to changing situations and will act quickly to get results, giving direction or
instructions to others as she thinks is necessary. She has a tendency to blame other people for
difficulties she encounters and may sometimes dismiss others' opinions as of relatively little or no
value. She strives energetically to ensure the well-being and happiness of her loved ones,
operating from a strong position of protectionism. By listening carefully to the reactions of others,
Jessica Stemen

she may avoid being considered rather bull-headed at times. She is outstanding at establishing
and implementing orderly procedures, rules and regulations, and may show impatience with
those who don't carry out their designated tasks or work by the rules.
She does not appreciate critical comments about her personal qualities as she sees these
comments as personal attacks on her integrity. She may need to slow down to consider the
feelings of people she is involved with and regularly listen to, and accept, other people's
opposing points of view. Her communication style is honest, direct and to the point and she
prefers others to be similarly candid with her. She needs to make a special effort to remain open
to the ideas and views of others, and avoid shutting other people down. Much of her true style
may be hidden from others at work as she is unlikely to express her feelings until she knows
someone well.
Because of her apparent work focus, other people may be surprised to discover that Jessica is
quite devoted to her family and friends. Sometimes seen as blunt and forthright, she may tread
on other people's toes without knowing it. She needs to be aware of being too outspoken,
over-talkative and overly logical with some colleagues. Frequently reflecting, her intuitive feelings
prompt a sense of the endless possibilities inherent within her as she considers how such
potential may be realised. Jessica's work style is down-to-earth, assertive and persuasive.
Decision Making
Jessica is extremely realistic and relies on and trusts what her senses tell her about her world.
She seeks realistic and satisfying solutions to challenges. Using past experiences to help her
solve current problems and get things done is one of her strong points. She sees herself as
realistic, practical and matter-of-fact, although others may not always see the practicality of some
of her decisions. She prefers to learn from personal experience and not just from study or
reading.
She tends to be influenced by the idea, rather than the people behind the idea. In her mind there
must always be a good reason for doing something and people's feelings alone aren't normally
sufficient to influence her. Her effectiveness depends on how much personal fulfilment she
receives from the current task. She is logical, objective and analytical with great reasoning
power. Politically aware, Jessica is normally comfortable with her decisions even in the face of
possible conflict with others in more senior positions.
She is adaptable but constantly needs to get results. To make quick decisions she likes matters
to be logical, so she requires and expects rationality in most situations. She is prepared to make
high risk decisions. She prefers action to conversation and enjoys dealing with difficult situations
the moment they arise. She may occasionally see herself as being physically larger than life,
especially during confrontation. She is frank and decisive and doesn't hesitate to let others know
where she stands.

Possible Blind Spots
Our perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who we
are onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our less
conscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “Blind
Spots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test them
for validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues.
Jessica’s possible Blind Spots:
Jessica strives after justice and wants to rectify injustice whenever and wherever she finds it - but
her values must prevail. Jessica may not always appreciate or solicit the views of others and
might, as a result, miss a more suitable solution. As a forthright, results oriented individual, she
will challenge authority, take risks, overstep boundaries and act without reference.
She sometimes has difficulty in absorbing other peoples' points of view. Slowing down to
consider the ramifications of her actions on others will make her more effective. She may adopt
an “if you've got a headache take an aspirin” attitude, which indicates a lack of empathy to some.
What she perceives as her own flamboyant behaviour can sometimes be seen by others as
crudeness and may alienate the very people she is trying to impress. Since she is a natural critic,
she tends not to demonstrate her appreciation of the positive attributes or contributions of those
around her.
Sometimes she is so intent on her own plans that she doesn't stop to listen to what others have
to say. It is difficult to know what to expect from her next. She would much rather engage in quick
intellectual banter than complete some mundane task or consider spending quiet time on her
own. Perhaps best thought of as one of life's natural organisers, she is practical, strong willed
and needs to get her own way or she may become rebellious. She may jump to conclusions
without gathering all the necessary information or taking the time to really understand the
situation. Jessica has a strong active conscience and may not be prepared to even consider
others' values and opinions, particularly if they are not prepared to follow her lead.

Opposite Type
The description in this section is based on Jessica's opposite type on the Insights Wheel. Often,
we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are different
to our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for personal
growth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness.
Recognising your Opposite Type:
Jessica’s opposite Insights type is the Supporter, Jung’s “Introverted Feeling type”.
Supporters are affable, amiable, steady, loyal individuals who get on well with others. They build
a close relationship with a small group of associates in the work environment. Jessica will see
the Supporter’s efforts being directed at retaining the familiar and predictable. Supporters look for
constant appreciation from others and may be slow to adapt to change. They will often go the
“extra mile” to help someone they consider as a friend.
Jessica may suspect the Supporter requires assistance in eliminating the old and embracing the
new. Supporters are cautious, conventional, diplomatic and sincere and may avoid decision
making until many of the facts and details are available to them. The Supporter is intent on
maintaining a low profile. In order to perform well, the Supporter needs specific and detailed
instructions before starting a job.
Jessica will experience frustration when the Supporter, if challenged, becomes stubborn and
defiant. Supporters are easy going and low key people and like to feel needed and significant in
other peoples’ lives. Even if a mistake has been made by someone else the Supporter may
spend a lot of time sympathising and attempting to diffuse responsibility. Disagreements or
opposing views can be stressful to Supporters. If the conflict in the workplace becomes too great
they may become restless and uneasy, often withdrawing to avoid further conflict.

Opposite Type
Communication with Jessica's Opposite Type
Written specifically for Jessica, this section suggests some strategies she could use for effective
interaction with someone who is her opposite type on the Insights Wheel.
Jessica Stemen: How you can meet the needs of your Opposite Type:
● Speak calmly and quietly, avoiding ostentation and bluster.
● Seek confirmation of willingness to undertake new tasks.
● If you ask a question, be quiet and give time for her to consider her response.
● Ask how she feels about the things she does.
● Speak slowly and sincerely.
● Provide regular support and feedback - show interest.
Jessica Stemen: When dealing with your opposite type DO NOT:
● Act aggressively or reject her ideas without explanation.
● Become too impersonal.
● Use destructive criticism or create unnecessary conflict.
● Upset or undermine the status quo.
● Shout, bully or threaten with position power.
● Undervalue her ability to make essential contributions.

Suggestions for Development
Insights Discovery does not offer direct measures of skill, intelligence, education or training.
However, listed below are some suggestions for Jessica’s development. Identify the most
important areas which have not yet been addressed. These can then be incorporated into a

● Really listening to the views of others.
● Considering alternative solutions to every decision.
● Being less forthright and more discreet.
● Reflecting on just how considerate some others think she is.
● Realising that some others are not as quick as she is.
● Exploring work that gets in touch with the inner self.
● Remembering that arguing does not stimulate everyone.
● Reducing her high profile stance.
● Slowing down and thinking things through.
● Withholding her opinions.

Page 4 Introduction This Insights Discovery profile is based on Jessica Stemen’s responses to the Insights Preference Evaluator which was completed on 10 October 2013. The origins of personality theory can be traced back to the fifth century BC, when Hippocrates identified four distinct energies exhibited by different people. The Insights System is built around the model of personality first identified by the Swiss psychologist Carl Gustav Jung. This model was published in his 1921 work “Psychological Types” and developed in subsequent writings. Jung’s work on personality and preferences has since been adopted as the seminal work in understanding personality and has been the subject of study for thousands of researchers to the present day. Using Jung's typology, this Insights Discovery profile offers a framework for self-understanding and development. Research suggests that a good understanding of self, both strengths and weaknesses, enables individuals to develop effective strategies for interaction and can help them to better respond to the demands of their environment. Generated from several hundred thousand permutations of statements, this profile is unique. It reports statements which your Evaluator responses indicate may apply to you. Modify or delete any statement which does not apply, but only after checking with colleagues or friends to identify whether the statement may be a “blind spot” for you. Use this profile pro-actively. That is, identify the key areas in which you can develop and take action. Share the important aspects with friends and colleagues. Ask for feedback from them on areas which seem particularly relevant for you and develop an action plan for growth personally and interpersonally.

Use this section to gain a better understanding of her approaches to her activities, relationships and decisions. Personal Style Both alert and outspoken, Jessica can see the fatal flaw in a proposal or position but will often argue (and often enjoys arguing) on either side of an issue from a position of “devils advocate”. Articulate and thinking, she tends to be matter-of-fact and practical. She likes a fast pace and is adept at using functional devices and procedures. Jessica likes working where she can achieve immediate, visible and tangible results. She exhibits high standards of performance and she will not necessarily accept critical observations of her work. Jessica likes to make things happen and drive everything around her. She is good at getting things done and does so in a very assertive way. She sees herself as having rigorous standards that typically take precedence over her own and others' personal needs. Hard work, busy schedules and merit-based remuneration are hallmarks of the way Jessica prefers to work. She tends to appreciate tradition and is interested in maintaining established rules and procedures. She is often more interested in “real things” than intangibles, such as abstract ideas and theories. At her best, she is responsible, industrious, decisive and energetic. She feels more secure when she can control a situation by ensuring other people conform to her thinking. She is keen to pick out logical inconsistencies. Jessica is a pragmatic individual who can be as tough as the situation warrants. She likes to have control of most situations and can speak out clearly and forcibly when she sees the need to do so. By slowing down occasionally she is more able to gather relevant data and consider both the practical and personal ramifications of her actions. Eager to add to her knowledge, Jessica is passionate about researching significant new subjects that capture her interest. Jessica is a resourceful, action-oriented person who lives for the future by making every moment count. She aims to live by her rules and believes that everyone else should do too! Jessica's ability to focus on task suggests that she is a good problem solver. She is seen as a powerful leader as she is able to think on her feet. To manage her tensions, she needs to be constantly in control and get things done without wasting time. She is quick to spot opportunities and see how they can be turned to her advantage. Because she lives by principles and rules, Jessica is very consistent and dependable. Jessica systematically sets about achieving her scheduled goals on time in an efficient and effective manner. She tends to be realistic and matter-of-fact about work issues. Interacting with Others Jessica is alert to changing situations and will act quickly to get results, giving direction or instructions to others as she thinks is necessary. She has a tendency to blame other people for difficulties she encounters and may sometimes dismiss others' opinions as of relatively little or no value. She strives energetically to ensure the well-being and happiness of her loved ones, operating from a strong position of protectionism. By listening carefully to the reactions of others,
  • 6. Jessica Stemen © The Insights Group Ltd, 1992-2013. All rights reserved. Page 6 she may avoid being considered rather bull-headed at times. She is outstanding at establishing and implementing orderly procedures, rules and regulations, and may show impatience with those who don't carry out their designated tasks or work by the rules. She does not appreciate critical comments about her personal qualities as she sees these comments as personal attacks on her integrity. She may need to slow down to consider the feelings of people she is involved with and regularly listen to, and accept, other people's opposing points of view. Her communication style is honest, direct and to the point and she prefers others to be similarly candid with her. She needs to make a special effort to remain open to the ideas and views of others, and avoid shutting other people down. Much of her true style may be hidden from others at work as she is unlikely to express her feelings until she knows someone well. Because of her apparent work focus, other people may be surprised to discover that Jessica is quite devoted to her family and friends. Sometimes seen as blunt and forthright, she may tread on other people's toes without knowing it. She needs to be aware of being too outspoken, over-talkative and overly logical with some colleagues. Frequently reflecting, her intuitive feelings prompt a sense of the endless possibilities inherent within her as she considers how such potential may be realised. Jessica's work style is down-to-earth, assertive and persuasive. Decision Making Jessica is extremely realistic and relies on and trusts what her senses tell her about her world. She seeks realistic and satisfying solutions to challenges. Using past experiences to help her solve current problems and get things done is one of her strong points. She sees herself as realistic, practical and matter-of-fact, although others may not always see the practicality of some of her decisions. She prefers to learn from personal experience and not just from study or reading. She tends to be influenced by the idea, rather than the people behind the idea. In her mind there must always be a good reason for doing something and people's feelings alone aren't normally sufficient to influence her. Her effectiveness depends on how much personal fulfilment she receives from the current task. She is logical, objective and analytical with great reasoning power. Politically aware, Jessica is normally comfortable with her decisions even in the face of possible conflict with others in more senior positions. She is adaptable but constantly needs to get results. To make quick decisions she likes matters to be logical, so she requires and expects rationality in most situations. She is prepared to make high risk decisions. She prefers action to conversation and enjoys dealing with difficult situations the moment they arise. She may occasionally see herself as being physically larger than life, especially during confrontation. She is frank and decisive and doesn't hesitate to let others know where she stands. • 12. Jessica Stemen © The Insights Group Ltd, 1992-2013. All rights reserved. Page 12 Possible Blind Spots Our perceptions of self may be different to the perceptions others have of us. We project who we are onto the outside world through our “persona” and are not always aware of the effect our less conscious behaviours have on others. These less conscious behaviours are termed “Blind Spots”. Highlight the important statements in this section of which you are unaware and test them for validity by asking for feedback from friends or colleagues. Jessica’s possible Blind Spots: Jessica strives after justice and wants to rectify injustice whenever and wherever she finds it - but her values must prevail. Jessica may not always appreciate or solicit the views of others and might, as a result, miss a more suitable solution. As a forthright, results oriented individual, she will challenge authority, take risks, overstep boundaries and act without reference. She sometimes has difficulty in absorbing other peoples' points of view. Slowing down to consider the ramifications of her actions on others will make her more effective. She may adopt an “if you've got a headache take an aspirin” attitude, which indicates a lack of empathy to some. What she perceives as her own flamboyant behaviour can sometimes be seen by others as crudeness and may alienate the very people she is trying to impress. Since she is a natural critic, she tends not to demonstrate her appreciation of the positive attributes or contributions of those around her. Sometimes she is so intent on her own plans that she doesn't stop to listen to what others have to say. It is difficult to know what to expect from her next. She would much rather engage in quick intellectual banter than complete some mundane task or consider spending quiet time on her own. Perhaps best thought of as one of life's natural organisers, she is practical, strong willed and needs to get her own way or she may become rebellious. She may jump to conclusions without gathering all the necessary information or taking the time to really understand the situation. Jessica has a strong active conscience and may not be prepared to even consider others' values and opinions, particularly if they are not prepared to follow her lead. Personal Notes

Often, we have most difficulty understanding and interacting with those whose preferences are different to our own. Recognising these characteristics can help in developing strategies for personal growth and enhanced interpersonal effectiveness. Recognising your Opposite Type: Jessica’s opposite Insights type is the Supporter, Jung’s “Introverted Feeling type”. Supporters are affable, amiable, steady, loyal individuals who get on well with others. They build a close relationship with a small group of associates in the work environment. Jessica will see the Supporter’s efforts being directed at retaining the familiar and predictable. Supporters look for constant appreciation from others and may be slow to adapt to change. They will often go the “extra mile” to help someone they consider as a friend. Jessica may suspect the Supporter requires assistance in eliminating the old and embracing the new. Supporters are cautious, conventional, diplomatic and sincere and may avoid decision making until many of the facts and details are available to them. The Supporter is intent on maintaining a low profile. In order to perform well, the Supporter needs specific and detailed instructions before starting a job. Jessica will experience frustration when the Supporter, if challenged, becomes stubborn and defiant. Supporters are easy going and low key people and like to feel needed and significant in other peoples’ lives. Even if a mistake has been made by someone else the Supporter may spend a lot of time sympathising and attempting to diffuse responsibility. Disagreements or opposing views can be stressful to Supporters. If the conflict in the workplace becomes too great they may become restless and uneasy, often withdrawing to avoid further conflict.
