4. Vectors of:
(Females only)
Agent 1. Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEE,
EEEV):
Endemic reports of encephalitis and case fatality rates
between 30% and 80% in humans of North America,
and up to 95% in equines throughout the Americas
(NCBI, 2017). 8 human cases of EEE reported annually
in the United States (CDC, 2016).
Virus attacks the central nervous system and causes
inflammation of the brain and spinal chord.
Fatal in unvaccinated horses (N.C. Cooperative
Extension 2016).
Agent 2. Dog heartworm:
Host parasitic nematodes (microfilariae) affecting
lungs of a variety of mammals. Adult female worms
grow up to 14 inches in length and can survive up to
5 to 7 years. (AVMF, 2017)
5. Control Measures evolved from contaminating
egg laying sites with petroleum to ecological
Larval Surveillance.
6. Holometabolous
metamorphosis;
Complete life cycle.
Multiple aquatic
instars into terrestrial
adult.
Larvae may
experience diapause
during cold seasons.
Larvae feeds on
organic materials and
are surface breathing.
