2. Introduction
Jennifer Cheruiyot, a registered nurse at Broadlawns Medical Center
in Des Moines, Iowa, contributes her time and effort to various
community organizations. Feeling a deep connection with those
close to her own heritage, Jennifer Cheruiyot is a member of the
Gotabgaa International Organization, created to bring those with
Kenyan backgrounds together.
Originally starting as an e-mail list in 1993, the organization was
officially created and recognized in the year 2000 as a non-profit built
to connect, inspire, and empower it's members through education,
networking, and cultural awareness. Each year since 2003 a
conference has been held to bring members together, both from
Kenya and around the United States.
The organization provides opportunities for volunteers to adopt or
mentor an international student, easing their transition to life in an
American school. The youth innovation summit also works to
educate youth down a technological path, collaborating with local
groups to teach software coding and prepare young people for
rewarding careers.
