COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
OBJECTIVE
Volunteer/serve in the Wilmington community assisting those in
need and enhancing my leadership and professional development
skills.
MISSION
As an avid volunteer in the community I enjoy the
opportunity to serve others. I received the 2002-03 UNCW Staff
Award of Excellence, 2003 YWCA Volunteer Woman of the Year
award, and the 2003 State of North Carolina Award of Excellence in
recognition of my efforts. I accepted one of my first volunteer roles at
UNCW representing the vice chancellor for Public Service and
Continuing Studies on the UNCW Minority Affairs Committee (now
called Campus Diversity) from 1996 to 1997 to assist in planning
recognition events and awards for UNCW minority students who
excelled academically. Then in 1998, I completed the Leadership
Wilmington Program. In 1999, I was appointed to the Leadership
Wilmington Executive Committee. Since 1998 I have served on the
board of directors of New Hanover Community Action, Inc. which
provides personal assistance in areas such as self-sufficiency, employment, housing, early childhood
education, the HeadStart program, nutrition, and emergency assistance to the poor.
In 2001, as a result of my volunteer work with the New Hanover County Community Action,
Inc. agency, I was nominated and selected by the North Carolina Office of Equal Opportunity to serve on
the North Carolina ROMA (Results Oriented Management and Accountability) Task Force for North
Carolina Community Action, which was formed to demonstrate measurable outcomes. As a member of the
NC ROMA Task Force, I am assisted in revising the plan that is currently in place and developed a new
strategic plan for community action agencies across the state. In addition to my formal volunteer efforts, I
accept the personal challenge of working with at-risk children in the community as needed.

The NC ROMA task force is aimed at developing common goals and measures
for all members of the North Carolina Community Action network.
Additionally, the Task Force is charged with helping to design a web-based,
