3. Critical Gerontology
• Critical gerontology is an approach to aging research, policy, and
practice which questions the assumptions underpinning the
biomedical model of aging and the notion that older people are a
burden on society. It takes a sociological approach to aging issues
and argues that many of the so-called problems associated with
aging are not the result of inherent individual declines and disabilities
but rather are due to social structures which limit the ability of older
people to express their strengths and continue to make contributions
to society as full citizens.
9. Gender
• Gender does not refer to biological differences between men and
women but rather to the constellation of beliefs and practices that
give meaning to being male or female.
• Individuals are born male or female but learn to become masculine
and feminine through the socialization they receive. They
decide different activities for leisure.
• Cooking for women or driving a truck only foe men, etc.
