9. DIFFERENT PARTS OF
FAULT
1. FOOT WALL- the block
below.
2. HANGING WALL- the
upper or overlying block
along the fault plane.
3. FAULT TRACE-
Intersection of a fault with
the ground surface.
4. FAULT PLANE- the fracture
surface of a fault.
10. ACTIVE AND INACTIVE FAULTS
ACTIVE FAULTS- is a fault that is likely to become the
source of another earthquake sometime in the future.
INACTIVE FAULTS- do not show any signs of
generated earthquakes within the last 10, 000 years
but possibly still generate earthquakes in the future.
11. THE THREE KINDS OF FAULTS
1. NORMAL FAULT- Is
formed due to tensional
forces that pull the crust
apart. The forces move
the crust vertically
apart. The footwall
moves up and the
hanging wall on the
other side moves down.
12. THE THREE KINDS OF FAULTS
2. REVERSE FAULT- Is
formed due to strong
compressional forces that
push the crust towards
each other. The hanging
wall moves up and the
footwall moves down.
13. THE THREE KINDS OF FAULTS
STRIKE-SLIP FAULT- is due
to horizontal forces that slide
the crust past each other.
The two-layer of rock
between the faults are
shifted horizontally or parallel
to the fault plane. There are
two types of strike slip fault:
the left-lateral and the
right-lateral.
14.
15. FILL IN THE BLANKS
NORMAL FAULT
The 1. __________ moves up and the 2.
____________ on the other side moves down.
16. FILL IN THE BLANKS
REVERSE FAULT
The hanging wall 3. __________ and the footwall 4.
___________.
17. FILL IN THE BLANKS
STRIKE-SLIP FAULT
The two-layer of rock between the faults are shifted
horizontally or 5. __________ to the fault plane.
