3. ULTRA SONIC PULSE VELOCITY TEST
INTRODUCTION
(UPV) testing of concrete is based on the pulse velocity method to
provide information on the uniformity of concrete, cavities cracks,
and defects or other discontinuities.
This test method is applicable to assess the uniformity and relative
quality of concrete to indicate the present of voids and cracks, and to
evaluate the effectiveness of cracks repairs.
It is also applicable to indicate changes in the properties of concrete
and in the survey of structure, to estimate the severity of
deterioration or cracking.
The pulse velocity range from about 3 to 5 km/s.
Frequency range of 15-175 KHz.
4. QUALITY GRADINGS OF CONCTETE
Ultrasonic pulse velocity km/s Quality of concrete
Below 3.0 Doubtful
3.0 to 3.5 Medium
3.5 to 4.5 Good
Above 4.5 excellent
(AS PER IS:13311 PART 1)
• Higher the velocity of pulse, greater is the strength of
concrete.
5. ARRANGEMENT OF EQUIPMENTS
• There are three way of measuring pulse velocity through
concrete.
Direct transmission
Semi-direct
transmission
Indirect transmission
6. TRANSDUCER ARRANGEMENT
Since the maximum pulse energy is transmitted at right
angles to the face of the transmitter, the direct method is
most reliable.
The path of pulse travel is clearly defined and can be
measured accurately.
The semi-direct method gives satisfactory results, if the
angle between the transducer and the path length is not
large.
The indirect method is least satisfactory and rarely used.
7. FACTORS AFFECTING PULSE VELOCITY
MEASUREMENT
1. Smoothness of contact surface
2. Path length
3. Moisture condition of concrete
4. Temperature of concrete
5. Reinforcing steel
When the axis of reinforcing bars is perpendicular to
the direction of propagation and the quantity of
reinforcement is small, the influence of the
reinforcement on the pulse velocity is generally
small.
8. APPLICATION OF THE ULTRASONIC TESTING
Various application of the ultrasonic pulse
velocity method are:
Measurement of concrete uniformity.
Can be used to detect the development of
cracks in structures such as dams, and to
check deterioration due to frost or chemical
action.
Measurement of elastic modulus.
9. Studies on durability of concrete.
Strength development monitoring – useful in
precasting and in deciding removal of
formwork.
Estimation of strength of concrete.
Detection of any development of voids or
honeycombing in concrete.
Measurement of the thickness of concrete
roads or slabs.
