1. 5. How did you address/ attract your target audience?
I addressed the targeted audience suitably by using a female teenager as the main
character. I felt this could be an ideal opportunity to differ the main role as most
apocalyptic films have a male that is the main role. However I thought that having a
female as a main character would broaden the target audience range and would
pitch it towards more females as I feel having a female playing the main role is
classed as unusual therefore it would attract the targeted audience.
I attracted my target audience by producing an opening to a horror scene. This was
shown through the generic conventions of a horror. I did this by including quick cuts,
for instance this is shown in the shot where my character reaches for the door
handles but suddenly jumps back after another hand smacks the glass from the
other side. The quick cut shots can be seen of her jumping back and reaching for her
gun to pull it out on the unknowing predator that lye’s waiting. The quick cut shots
emphasise the need for the character to rush as she has to protect herself and also
escape from the place she is in. I included low lighting in my opening scene to add
mystery and an unpleasant atmosphere. It also benefited the setting as it allowed it
to become dreary looking and gives a feeling of emptiness and sympathy for the
main character.
Because I set my film in an ordinary, family orientated home, it makes it more
relatable for the audience to compare their lives to making them believe that
something like this could happen at any point in time creating a sense of fear for
them. I made the house look more family orientated by setting it in a big house with
lots of space for children to move about. I also included a shot of the child’s swing
set outside and I had my main character glance over the family photos.
