donors so they possess positive charge in their
ionic state. They are said to be ‘electropositive’

The elements which are not having properties
like metals e.g. malleability and ductility are
called non-metals. The atoms of these elements
are electron acceptors so they possess negative
charge in their ionic state. They are said to be
‘electronegative’ or ‘anions’. While designating
formula for a compound, usually the metal
atom/atoms is/are placed first, followed by the
non-metal atom/atoms. For example, in NaCl,
Na or sodium is the metal and is placed first
while Cl or chlorine/chloride is the non-metal
and is placed after the metal atom.
8. How is the Naming of Inorganic
Compounds Done?
The system of naming of the inorganic
compounds is called Nomenclature approved
by IUPAC (International Union for Pure and
Applied Chemistry) in 1960. In this naming,
the electropositive elements are pronounced
first followed by the name of valence state of
the electronegative element. For example
NaCl is pronounced as sodium chloride and
not sodium chlorine as the valence state of
chlorine is called chloride.
