One-week Box Beam Project for 3D Design. Using box beam technology, students must create a structure that is taller than the tallest member of their group, touches two places on the ground and one on a chair and lastly must have an extra ordinary relationship to gravity.

1. ONE-WEEK BOX BEAM
GROUP PROJECT

2. PROBLEM:
Using box beam construction, create a structure that
suggests and extraordinary or unexpected relationship to
gravity.
MATERIALS:
Corrugated cardboard, brown paper/packing tape(matte),
hot glue and glue gun, utility knife/scissors, paper and
scotch tape

3. PARAMETERS:
- Beams must be square and clean, no triangles or tube, no
painting or wrapping paper around cardboard.
- The sculpture must be taller than the tallest person in the group.
- The cardboard may only have three points of contact (two on
floor and one on a stool or chair).
- The stool must remain unattached or braced against a wall.
- Each group is required to create an approximately 1:8 preliminary
paper model to investigate the stresses, and then finally translate
the scale model into a full-size structure.

6. Working successfully with groups requires leadership and
membership skills. Focus on the task at hand, stay involved and
negotiate.

7. This sculpture has an extraordinary or unexpected relationship to gravity with solid
craftsmanship.

8. Use one color/finish of tape and hide cardboard text on inside of structure.

9. Keep materials and beams uniform.

10. Be consistent with materials. Varieties in cardboard and tape distract from structure.

11. Close ends of beams – no holes or openings. Make beams not stacked boxes.
Increasing a cardboard beam’s girth renders it weak.

12. Poor craftsmanship distracts from the sculpture so be focused when constructing your beams.

13. This structure comprised of beams in the form of letters, wasn’t taller than the
tallest member of the group.

14. Avoid attempts to hide poor construction with a paint.

15. Individuals will evaluate and grade their group peers by
completing a confidential peer review after critique.
