The music of the lowlands of Luzon is composed of Vocal and Instrumental music which varies in every
province of Luzon.
The lowland folks are composed mostly offarmers, fishermen, artisans, vendors, and traders, and common
people. They have a deep faith in God, whom they serve with faith and devotion with faith and devotion. His/her key
celebrations are fiestas of festivals for thanksgiving of good harvest, and to honor Jesus Christ, Santo Niño, Virgin
Mary, and patron saints in the Roman Catholic Church.
Through the various music used for liturgy, devotion, and secular purposes, one will discover how the people
of the lowlands express his/her feelings, history, and religious beliefs.

What are Folk Songs?
Folk songs are traditional and collective music of a town, province, or a country that uses simple
melodies and harmonies. It was written by the folk and are sung to accompany daily activities such as farming,
fishing, and putting babies to sleep. Also, music is used in singing and dancing to reflecttheir way of life, beliefs, and
other daily practices. These are traditionally passed on orally. Most Philippine folk songs have Spanish and other
Western influences.
The folk songs ofLuzon lowlands are performed in his/her native language such as Ilocano, Pangasinense,
Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano, and others. People created melodic chants and indigenous instruments based
on the materials available where they lived.

Santacruzan commemorates the search of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena and

Harana is in duple or quadruple meter.

A song traditionally associated with the Visayan region.
A debate ordialogue song inwhich a woman and a man compete to see who is betterat improvising romantic
verses.

A. Rondalla
The word rondalla came from the Spanish word ronda meaning “serenade”. It originated in Spain but became
popular in Philippine folk music after it was introduced in the 19th century. Rondalla is an ensemble of string
instruments with a pick. Sometimes, rondalla is played with percussion instruments like the drums and marimba.

Brass band is a musical ensemble that consists of brass wind instrument, most often with a percussion section.
During the Spanish period, Filipinos were not allowed to organize their own bands. It became popular in the 20th
century during the time of American regime.

What is Musikong Bumbong?
A Filipino marching band that use woodwind instruments that are made of bamboo. The instruments are
similar to brass band but have different sounds.
The D’ Original Malabon Musikong Bumbong started as a plain “Banda de Boca” – meaning “bibig” or
mouth, in Barrio Tonsuya, Malabon in 1896. Felix Ramos was both the founder and inventor of the bamboo
instruments. The first members of the band are all Katipuneros.
The band is known today as “Musikawayan” under the leadership ofP/Lt. Col. Gilbert M. Ramos, a fourth
generation descendant of the band’s founder.
What is Himig Pangkat Kawayan?
Himig Pangkat Kawayan is popularly known as the “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines”. It is an
orchestra that plays music using non-traditional instruments and founded in 1966.
The musical instruments are more than a hundred are made six kinds ofthe versatile bamboo in various
sizes, shapes,and designs.

The Himig Pangkat Kawayan Instruments
What is Angklung Ensemble?
The Angklung ensemble is a small group ofmusicians who plays angklung bamboo instruments. It is
originated in Indonesia. To make the sound livelier itis commonly accompanied by double bass, guitars, and
percussion instruments.
Angklung has more than two and a half octaves or around 30 pitches to be able to play a wide range of
musical pieces. Itcan also be a part of other ensemble like the PangkatKawayan.

A Philippines National Treasure, the Bamboo Organ that can be found in St. Joseph’s Church, Las Piñas
City. It is made up of902 bamboo pipes.
It was completed in 1824 under the supervision ofFr. Diego Cera. Every February, the city celebrates the
International Bamboo Organ Festival. The festival’s aim is to pursue and develop the rich cultural tradition of Las
Piñas City.
