The music of the lowlands of Luzon is composed of Vocal and Instrumental music which varies in every
province of Luzon.
The lowland folks are composed mostly offarmers, fishermen, artisans, vendors, and traders, and common
people. They have a deep faith in God, whom they serve with faith and devotion with faith and devotion. His/her key
celebrations are fiestas of festivals for thanksgiving of good harvest, and to honor Jesus Christ, Santo Niño, Virgin
Mary, and patron saints in the Roman Catholic Church.
Through the various music used for liturgy, devotion, and secular purposes, one will discover how the people
of the lowlands express his/her feelings, history, and religious beliefs.

What are Folk Songs?
Folk songs are traditional and collective music of a town, province, or a country that uses simple
melodies and harmonies. It was written by the folk and are sung to accompany daily activities such as farming,
fishing, and putting babies to sleep. Also, music is used in singing and dancing to reflecttheir way of life, beliefs, and
other daily practices. These are traditionally passed on orally. Most Philippine folk songs have Spanish and other
Western influences.
The folk songs ofLuzon lowlands are performed in his/her native language such as Ilocano, Pangasinense,
Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano, and others. People created melodic chants and indigenous instruments based
on the materials available where they lived.
Characteristics of Folk Songs:
 Sung in his/her dialect
 Begins with one key and ends in the same key
 Learned through rote
 Composers and lyricist are usually unknown
 Mood can be sentimental, playful and humorous

- Is a traditional Filipino folk song depicting a small hut with a variety of vegetables surrounding it.

- A popular folk song composed by Felipe De Leon; It is a song for working in the fields.
3. Leron, leron Sinta
- A Filipino folksong from the Tagalog region handed down through oral tradition. It is often presented as
a children’s song but it is really a courtship song.

- Also known as “Sitsiritsit Alibangbang”
- A Filipino folk song thatdescribes a woman threatening a store owner that the ants will go after him if he
will not extend credit.
- It originated way back Spanish colonization and shows the ordinary life during that time.

- A popular Kapampangan folk song which literally means “I have a ring”.
- It speaks ofa girl who lostthe beautiful ring she inherited from her mother. Since then, she became sad.

What is Sacred Music?
When the Spaniards came to the Philippines, they influenced not only our cultural
practices butalso our beliefs and religion.Withthe introduction ofChristianity came the different
Western forms of music that are used for religious rites.
Sacred music is compositions with religious themes that are meantto be performed for
church services or religious activities such as in Masses, Pastores,Senakulo,Pasyon and etc.

What are the types of Sacred music in the Philippines?
A. Mass
 The word “Mass” came from the Latin word “Missa” – used in the concluding rite of the Mass in Latin.
 A sacrament of the Eucharist mostly celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church.
 Its purpose is for praising and thanksgiving.
 Known as the “Highest form of praying to God”.

 A Christmas season folk dance and song.
 It depicts how the shepherds visited child Jesus in a manger.
 The actors and actresses go from house to house while singing “daygon” (worship)

 Senakulo came from the latin word “Cenakulo”.
 Played during Lenten season.
 Portrays events from the Old and New testaments about the life, sufferings, and
death of Jesus.
D. Pasyon
 Philippine epic that narrates the life, passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
 Its recitation is known as the “pabasa”.
 The reading ofPasyonis a traditional religious practice inthe Philippines and people gatheraround the reader
to listen and reflect.
 Composed of verses with 5-line stanzas with 8 syllables each line.

 It is the highlight of the Flores de Mayo.
 Santacruzan commemorates the search of the Holy Cross by Queen Helena and
her son, the newly converted emperor Constantine the Great. After the Holy Cross
was found in Jerusalem and broughtback to Rome, there was joyful celebration for
thanksgiving.
 Sagalas and escorts parade the streets of the community while it is accompanied
with the music of “Dios Te Salve Maria”.
What is Secular Music?
Secular Music is a non-religious music. The word secular means “being separated from religion”. Words
are important part of secular music so people can sing songs together for entertainment and celebrations.

Secular music in the Philippines was also strongly influenced by the Spaniards;dance and secular songs are
used as means to express romantic love and love towards family, community, and nature.
Types of Secular Music in the Lowlands of Luzon
A. Harana
 A traditional Filipino serenade sung by a man to show his love for a woman
 Accompanied by guitar and performed outside the woman’s house.
 Harana is in duple or quadruple meter.
 An example of a Filipino Harana song are “Ang Tangi Kong Pag-Ibig” and “O, Ilaw”.
B. Balitaw
 A song traditionally associated with the Visayan region.
 A debate ordialogue song inwhich a woman and a man compete to see who is betterat improvising romantic
verses.
 Written in triple meter.
 An example ofBalitaw is “Sa Libis ng Nayon”- Santiago Suarez and “Arimunding-Munding” – Severino
Reyes.
C. Kumintang
 A popular wedding song in Batangas.
 Tagalog national chant about love and courtship and a dance-song performed by pairs ofwomen and men.
 Sometimes, known as a War song.

 An example of Kumintang is “Mutya ng Pasig” written by Deogracias A. Rosario and composed by
Nicanor Abelardo.
D. Kundiman (Art Song)
 Kundiman came from the word “Kung hindi man” or “though I am not worthy”.
 Through its melody, lyrics, and expressive singing,the Kundiman conveys a selfless and spiritual attitude,
intense love, longing, and oneness not only with a romantic partner but also with a parent, child, figure or
motherland.
 Some famous Filipino kundiman composers are Francisco Santiago, Nicanor Abelardo, Bonifacio
Abdon, Francisco Buencamino, and Angel Peña.
 Examples of Kundiman are “Pilipinas Kong Mahal” – Francisco Santiago” and “Nasaan Ka Irog”-
Nicanor Abelardo.

The word rondalla came from the Spanish word ronda meaning “serenade”. It originated in Spain but became
popular in Philippine folk music after it was introduced in the 19th century. Rondalla is an ensemble of string
instruments with a pick. Sometimes, rondalla is played with percussion instruments like the drums and marimba.

During the Spanish period, Filipinos were not allowed to organize their own bands. It became popular in the 20th
century during the time of American regime.

What is Musikong Bumbong?
A Filipino marching band that use woodwind instruments that are made of bamboo. The instruments are
similar to brass band but have different sounds.
The D’ Original Malabon Musikong Bumbong started as a plain “Banda de Boca” – meaning “bibig” or
mouth, in Barrio Tonsuya, Malabon in 1896. Felix Ramos was both the founder and inventor of the bamboo
instruments. The first members of the band are all Katipuneros.
The band is known today as “Musikawayan” under the leadership ofP/Lt. Col. Gilbert M. Ramos, a fourth
generation descendant of the band’s founder.
What is Himig Pangkat Kawayan?
Himig Pangkat Kawayan is popularly known as the “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines”. It is an
orchestra that plays music using non-traditional instruments and founded in 1966.
The musical instruments are more than a hundred are made six kinds ofthe versatile bamboo in various
sizes, shapes,and designs.

The Himig Pangkat Kawayan Instruments
What is Angklung Ensemble?
The Angklung ensemble is a small group ofmusicians who plays angklung bamboo instruments. It is
originated in Indonesia. To make the sound livelier itis commonly accompanied by double bass, guitars, and
percussion instruments.
Angklung has more than two and a half octaves or around 30 pitches to be able to play a wide range of
musical pieces. Itcan also be a part of other ensemble like the PangkatKawayan.

A Philippines National Treasure, the Bamboo Organ that can be found in St. Joseph’s Church, Las Piñas
City. It is made up of902 bamboo pipes.
It was completed in 1824 under the supervision ofFr. Diego Cera. Every February, the city celebrates the
International Bamboo Organ Festival. The festival’s aim is to pursue and develop the rich cultural tradition of Las
Piñas City.

The music of the lowlands of Luzon is composed of Vocal and Instrumental music which varies in every province of Luzon. The lowland folks are composed mostly offarmers, fishermen, artisans, vendors, and traders, and common people. They have a deep faith in God, whom they serve with faith and devotion with faith and devotion. His/her key celebrations are fiestas of festivals for thanksgiving of good harvest, and to honor Jesus Christ, Santo Niño, Virgin Mary, and patron saints in the Roman Catholic Church. Through the various music used for liturgy, devotion, and secular purposes, one will discover how the people of the lowlands express his/her feelings, history, and religious beliefs. 1. Describes the musical characteristics ofrepresentative music selections from the lowlands ofLuzon after listening. 2. Analyzes the musical elements ofsome Lowland vocal and instrumental music selections. 3. Identifies the musical instruments and other sound sources from the lowlands ofLuzon. 4. Explores ways ofproducing sounds on a variety ofsources that is similar to the instruments being studied. 5. Improvises simple rhythmic/melodic accompaniments to selected music from the Lowlands ofLuzon. 6. Performs music from Luzon lowlands with own accompaniment. 7. Evaluates music and performances with rubrics on musical elements and styles. 1. Distinguish the cultural background and musical elements ofvocal and instrumental music in lowlands of Luzon. 2. Also, music is used in singing and dancing to reflecttheir way of life, beliefs, and other daily practices. These are traditionally passed on orally. Most Philippine folk songs have Spanish and other Western influences. The folk songs ofLuzon lowlands are performed in his/her native language such as Ilocano, Pangasinense, Kapampangan, Tagalog, Bicolano, and others. People created melodic chants and indigenous instruments based on the materials available where they lived. A Filipino marching band that use woodwind instruments that are made of bamboo. The instruments are similar to brass band but have different sounds. The D’ Original Malabon Musikong Bumbong started as a plain “Banda de Boca” – meaning “bibig” or mouth, in Barrio Tonsuya, Malabon in 1896. Felix Ramos was both the founder and inventor of the bamboo instruments. The first members of the band are all Katipuneros. The band is known today as “Musikawayan” under the leadership ofP/Lt. Col. Gilbert M. Ramos, a fourth generation descendant of the band’s founder. What is Himig Pangkat Kawayan? Himig Pangkat Kawayan is popularly known as the “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines”. It is an orchestra that plays music using non-traditional instruments and founded in 1966. The musical instruments are more than a hundred are made six kinds ofthe versatile bamboo in various sizes, shapes,and designs. The Himig Pangkat Kawayan Instruments What is Angklung Ensemble? The Angklung ensemble is a small group ofmusicians who plays angklung bamboo instruments. It is originated in Indonesia. To make the sound livelier itis commonly accompanied by double bass, guitars, and percussion instruments. Angklung has more than two and a half octaves or around 30 pitches to be able to play a wide range of musical pieces. Itcan also be a part of other ensemble like the PangkatKawayan. ANGKLUNG  Bamboo-rattle tubes attached to a bamboo frame  Each angklung represents a note.  Played by shaking the lower part with one hand while the upper part holds by a steady hand. PANPIPES  Small pieces of bamboo in graduated small tubes that is put together by a string.  Each pipe represents a note and is blown to produce the sound. KALATOK (Bamboo Knocker)  Percussion instrument made of pieces of bamboos that are strung together with pieces of bamboo with varying tones when struck by a rubber mallet.  Plays the counterpoints of the melody. BUMBONG (Bamboo Tube)  Made up of hollow pieces of bamboo that serve as the orchestra’s wind section.  Each bumbong represents one note  It has to be blown through a mouthpiece. TULALI (Bamboo Flute)  Made of baga (one of the smallest varieties)  The opening is encircled by a banana leafing to a pentatonic scale played on four holes, one found below and three on top of the bamboo tube. TALUNGGATING (Bamboo Marimba)  Just like a typical xylophone but made up of bamboo.  Plays the melody.  Mallets made up of rattan and rubber are used to play the instrument.

Las Piñas Bamboo Organ A Philippines National Treasure, the Bamboo Organ that can be found in St. Joseph’s Church, Las Piñas City. It is made up of902 bamboo pipes. It was completed in 1824 under the supervision ofFr. Diego Cera. Every February, the city celebrates the International Bamboo Organ Festival. The festival’s aim is to pursue and develop the rich cultural tradition of Las Piñas City.
