Characters
Within a narrative of this short film, the friendship is presented clearly between the two
characters. The two characters are similar in a way that they are young teenagers who want to
have fun and explore adventurous activities. However, the first boy who is trapped in the
“puddle” by Mother Nature is presented to the audience more of a funny character. This is
shown in the scene when he jokes around with the other boy, teasing him that there is fox
behind. This shows him being a playful character because he seems to be teasing and mocking
his friend. On the other hand, the other character is presented as more wicked. For example, he
uses quite a lot of swear words and inappropriate language as this age, this may create a
2. negative impression to the audience however, they are young and the film also says that it is
restricted from the beginning.
Themes
The theme of friendship is shown through the two friends. This is evident from when they act
comfortably around each other, hence why they joke around and mock each other without
insults. Moreover, it is shown when they experience and explore adventurous activities
together like when they experience with Mother Nature. Therefore, this also links to the theme
of nature as the boy who is trapped in the “puddle” or “mud” is caused by Mother Nature.
Furthermore, the theme of conflict is also included because conflict occurs between human and
mother nature. Nature is testing humans (the boys) who happened to be acting inappropriately
or going against nature. This leads to an unexpected situation as the boy is trapped, caused by
Mother Nature. This short film teaches the audience that it is not suitable to be joking around
go against supernatural.
Genre
In terms of genre, the story is told by two friends who challenge themselves against nature.
Looking into the iconography, in one scene it portrays an image of a fox. This makes the
audience think back to plot happened in the beginning when the boy who transformed into
that creature was joking around, and seen as challenging Mother Nature of supernatural ideas.
In addition, the setting is set in both sides of Atlantic and the style gives a white usual, which
could represent what nature is like in a way seems innocent but there is also an interesting side
towards it.
In conclusion, the importance of what this filmis trying to convey to the audience that at such a
young age, teenagers tend to explore and discover things that can go against Mother Nature.
The relationship between nature and human psychology, and by our primitive traits manifest
themselves. As well as, the powerful screenplay embodies both the naivety and cruelty of kids
their age.
Painkiller
Formats and purposes
The purpose of this short filmis to convey that many factors can influence robbery. Painkiller
tells a story of armed robber of a convenience store goes wrong when he crosses paths with
hard-working Jay who is a taxi driver with nothing to lose. Mutual contempt turns into a kind of
understanding but not without some pain along the way.
Narrative
The short film begins to show a store which suggests to the audience the setting. It shows a
man who is presented to be a joker as his awkward, funny humor is conveyed to the audience.
This is evident from a scene where he continues to ignore the incident around him when the
3. store is about to get robbed. This suggests to the audience that he is not aware of anything
around him. Then later towards the main plot of the story, it changes when a kind
understanding between the characters are shown to the audience. This is conveyed when the
an Asian man is on the phone to his son, it shows that he man has nothing to lose as his son
demands a lot from his father, Also, a sense of sympathy is created as the robber starts to act
differently. He feels empathy and sorry towards the Asian man as it seems like he is living alone
and has nobody to be with, hence why his wife cheated and had an affair. The characters’
perspectives are shown to the audience that an incident can help to change someone point of
view or how they act all of a sudden.
It is a restricted short film therefore it is not suitable for young children to watch because it
contains inappropriate content as well as, violence and language that is not suitable to be
shown to youth such as the use of equipment – knife although it is being censored. Moreover,
an ellipsis is used when the robber acts different and stops all of sudden because his
perspective changes, this is seen to be influenced by the Asian man. The reason being for this is
because I think that they can both feel empathy for each other as both characters have nothing
to lose as one struggles to live on a day to day basis so he feels the need to rob for his living on
the other hand, another character faces problems in his life such as his wife having an affair.
Exposition is conveyed to the audience through how the characters are portrayed. For instance,
the main character (robber) is dressed in a gangster types of clothing, black hoodies and
wearing a cap, this may suggest about his background such as he is unemployed, does nothing
for a living therefore, he chose to rob and shoplift.
Themes
The theme of empathy is being introduced to the audience in a way that both characters can
feel towards the same way. The reason being for this is because both an Asian man and the
robber have been through problems in their lives therefore, this helps them to feel the
connection and surprisingly share somewhat similar perspectives. On the other hand, Painkiller
introduces another character who is the victim of this shoplifting, this character is portrayed
different in comparison to the other two characters because he is presented as the jokeman
through his funny, awkward humor.
Genre
In terms of genre, the narrative is quite interesting as provides to the audience perspectives of
characters who feel lost and feel as if they have nothing to lose in life. The iconography for
instance, a scene where both of the characters sit on the floor together, this allows the
audience to see the plot twist as the Asian man and the robber share their similar perspectives
and a sense of empathy for each other through similar experiences they have been through.
The setting is in a store where the main plot of the story is set. This gives a hint to the audience
that is it going to be a bout a shoplifting and robber as well as, the style is quite unordinary as in
4. real life shoplifting, people would not be running away in contrast to the owner of the shop is
acts awkwardly but is portrayed as funny.
In conclusion, the importance of using codes and conventions for Painkiller short film helps to
convey a lot of things to the audience such as the different perspectives between the
characters and how they share similar experiences that help them to understand or relate with
each other.
Comparative between FAUVE and PAINKILLER
The difference between the two films is that FAUVE seems to be a film that challenges against
supernatural and nature whereas PAINKILLER is a filmthat shows real life situations, for
instance when the Asian man knew about his wife affair. This could make the audience relate to
it as some may have experienced through tis similar situation before. FAUVE is a short film that
may be seen as realistic and unrealistic because some may believe about supernatural but
some may not. In terms of their style, they are both different as PAINKILLER has dark sides
towards it as it involves crime, threat and violence of the character however, FAUVE is a short
film that shows young children challenging against nature. PAINKILLR can be seen as a comedy
because there was some comedy involved, for instance during the scene when the shop owner
carried on munching his snacks whilst he was in a serious situation like that therefore the
audience may see this as a comedy film.
On the other hand, FAUVE gives a sense of sadness and sympathy as the two characters who
are young and wild wanting to experience adventurous activities but hadn’t been taught on the
fact that nature is powerful and superior therefore, they end up in a situation they did not want
to be in. The audience could feel sympathy and sorrow towards the short film. Moreover, the
way both short films are similar directed in a way that both use violent language such as
swearing words or language in which is seen inappropriate however, it shows what the real side
of characters and how they are portrayed – strong, masculine, wild and independent.
