These are the objectives...
Our topic now is about Filipino Principles and Norms
What is principle? (Prinsipyo) Principle is a proposition or a value that is a guide for behavior or evaluation. Another meaning for this, Principle is a noun used to refer to a legal, natural, or scientific rule or standard. It can also be used to refer to a general or personal moral standard.
(next slide for the examples)
1. A concrete example; for instance in the department of education (for teachers) we have the Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers. This ethics should be understood and followed by us teachers because this is part or this is essential characteristics in the organization.
2. The principle of human rights is central to the idea of democracy. - These include the right to life, the right to a fair trial, freedom from torture and other cruel and inhuman treatment, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the rights to health, education and an adequate standard of living.
*In short, the Filipino core values influence how they behave in any situation. The Philippines is recognized in having “collectivist” culture indicated by close family ties and community ties in society. Filipino values are centered at preserving social harmony, motivated mainly by the desire to be accepted within a group. This makes a Filipino a reliable person that can easily integrate and work with anyone, anytime, anyhow & anywhere.

And in that video we can see that teacher really remember the “Code of Ethics for Professional Teachers” kay gi – gakus jud siya sa iyang student showing sa iyang pasalamat nga naa siyay nakat.onan ug ni daku or daku iyang nakuha nga scores.
What is norms? (pamantayan) Norms may be defined as standardized ways of conduct and behavior (e.g., treating everyone fairly) in a society, company, or other organization.
There are 2 types of norms these are:
1. Cultural norms are learned and reinforced from parents, friends, teachers and others while growing up in a society. - (examples Using Smartphones Everywhere – Some people will be on their smartphone talking or texting others, even while in public, eating meals, or entertaining face-to-face guests. Dressing Down in Public – Wearing flip flops, sweat pants, wrinkled shirts, and other less-than-casual clothing in public places is normal.)
2. Social norms are unwritten rules of behavior shared by members of a given group or society. (Examples from western culture include: forming a line at store counters, saying 'bless you' when someone sneezes, or holding the door to someone entering a building right after you.)
Social and cultural norms are rules or expectations of behavior and thoughts based on shared beliefs within a specific cultural or social group.
Majority of Philippine population is bonded together by common values and traits that are first taught at home and being applied in our day to day lives.
Here are some of the family values Filipinos have:
1. Respect
One of the precious things Filipinos have is that they are respectful. Young, youth, people in all ages know how to show respect and courtesy. Some ways to show them are the use of “Po at Opo”, “Pagmamano” or putting the back of an elder’s hand on your forehead, and calling our older siblings or elders Ate or Kuya.
2. Christmas – It is commonly observed that Filipinos do have parols or lanterns decorated everywhere inside or outside their houses. You can feel the tradition when you can see lanterns decorated during Christmas season.
3. In connections to Christmas season, we also observed the Misa de Gallo, our Christmas will not be complete without attending or celebrating this mass (9 days before Christmas)
4. Next, we have rice; You will not consider a meal without a rice (breakfast, lunch, or dinner).
5. We also have lechon during occasions. Especially during fiestas “lechon is the star for all season, the star of the table”
6. Aside from that, we have singing the national anthem. It is not only observed in schools during flag ceremony, but also it is observed in public offices, for instance every first day of work (Monday) they sing the national anthem or in the cinema/movie, if this is the first showing or the last full show they will play the national anthem. We are expected to stand, stop walking, or stop whatever you’re doing once we hear the national anthem. This is showing respect to our country.
* So, these are the are some of the Filipino Principles and Norms.
Another example of Filipino norms are:
1. Close family ties – To a Filipino, family comes first & family is everything. He lives with it and depends on it. His dreams, aspirations and life are always centered on his family. This family solidarity keeps a Filipino to be positive amidst everything. He works hard to ensure a better life for the family. Family is evidently highly valued in the Philippines, thus, the government also strengthens Filipino family and in great support to ensure work-family balance.
2. “Utang na loob” or debt of gratitude – Filipinos always recognize one’s indebtedness. This means that he owed to a person who has helped him through the trials he had undergone. He repays that person in whatever kind, whatever time and situation. It is one way of showing deep appreciation for lending out a hand.
3. Pakikisama – There is no exact English translation for this word. It means getting along with others to preserve a harmonious relationship. It invites the Filipinos to do good and to be a nice companion. The value of pakikisama results in camaraderie and a feeling of closeness to one another. Pakikisama is also sharing one’s wealth, talent, time and self with fellow human beings and working together for a common good. This value bridges the gap between cultures.
