DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME
The Agribusiness Chain is an in-depth, fun and challenging strategy trading board game which
is used as an instructional material in Econ 124 – Agribusiness Management. It is inspired by
the concepts behind the classic board game Monopoly, Snake and Ladder, Chess and Playing
Card games. Here the players may act as input supplier, crop producer, livestock raiser, food
processor, distributor, transport operator, storage operator, farm worker, importer, etc. to buy or
trade agribusiness products including farm inputs, crops, livestock and food products.
By performing the roles or functions of the stakeholders/participants of agribusiness
commodity system and taking into considerations various economic concepts such as demand
and supply, surplus and shortage, inflation, profit, loss, weather and opportunity costs, the goal
is to dominate the play by acquiring agribusiness products as many and high as possible to
become the richest player at the end of the game.
PLAYER COMPOSITION AND PLAYING TIME
This game can be played by 2 to 6 players. Ideally the game is played by four players. Set-up
time ranges from 5 – 10 minutes. The playing time is about 1 – 3 hours.
OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME
The goal of the game is to become the richest player on the board at the end. This is achieved
by strategically acquiring agribusiness products as many and high as possible through carrying
out the roles of the stakeholders of the agribusiness system and becoming wise in making
decisions supported by luck from the dice and the cards.
GAME EQUIPMENT
The Agribusiness Chain game consists of a board, 2 dice, 4 pieces (tokens), 2 decks of playing
cards, play money, a facilitator’s tray and 1 transaction pad.
.
Board Game. The board contains 60 spaces. These spaces house 46 agribusiness products, 4
agricultural markets, 4 auction sales, 4 agri-freeze, 3 non-agribusiness products, 2 taxes, 2
subsidies, 2 marketing costs and 2 agri-loans.
Tokens. These are gamepieces used by players to represent themselves as they move around
the board. Each player will get a token to represent themselves as they move around the board.
Dice. The dice compose of two. The dice are used by the players to indicate the direction of the
token/pieces to move and land on a particular board space.
Decks of card. There are 2 decks of cards containing 75 playing cards each. One deck of cards
consists of the agribusiness stakeholders and the other deck of cards consists of money bills
and special cards.
Play Money. These are faked bills intended to be used as a medium of exchange for all the
financial transactions made by players in the agribusiness chain board game.

Agribusiness Facilitator’s Tray. This is used by the Agribusiness Facilitator to keep and organize
play moneys, playing cards and other materials used in the game.
Agribusiness Transaction’s Pad. This is used by the Agribusiness facilitator to list or write all
the trading and financial transactions made by players in the board game.
THE AGRIBUSINESS CHAIN GAMEBOARD
The board game consists of 69 spaces. Forty-six (46)of these spaces are agribusiness products
which are designated with a corresponding name, market value or listed price and color type.
There are 13 each of crops, livestock and food products and 7 agricultural inputs for a total of
46 agribusiness products that can be acquired by players. The non-agribusiness product spaces
have a composition of 23 consisting of 4 agricultural markets, 4 auction sales, 4 agri-freeze, 3
non-agribusiness products, 2 taxes, 2 subsidies, 2 costs and 2 loans.

It is inspired by the concepts behind the classic board game Monopoly, Snake and Ladder, Chess and Playing Card games. Here the players may act as input supplier, crop producer, livestock raiser, food processor, distributor, transport operator, storage operator, farm worker, importer, etc. to buy or trade agribusiness products including farm inputs, crops, livestock and food products. By performing the roles or functions of the stakeholders/participants of agribusiness commodity system and taking into considerations various economic concepts such as demand and supply, surplus and shortage, inflation, profit, loss, weather and opportunity costs, the goal is to dominate the play by acquiring agribusiness products as many and high as possible to become the richest player at the end of the game. The playing time is about 1 – 3 hours. OBJECTIVE OF THE GAME The goal of the game is to become the richest player on the board at the end. This is achieved by strategically acquiring agribusiness products as many and high as possible through carrying out the roles of the stakeholders of the agribusiness system and becoming wise in making decisions supported by luck from the dice and the cards.
