Pop art is an art movement that emerged from the UK and US in the mid to late 1950’s.
This Art Style presented a challenge to the classic traditions of fine art by including
images, comics, mundane cultural objects, and famous figures from pop culture.
In pop art, some material is removed from it’s known context and isolated, or combined
with unrelated material.
Some of the early artists that help popularize this genre were: Edaurdo Paolozzi, Richard
Hamilton, Larry Rivers, and Jasper Johns.
The aim of the pop art movement was to blur the lines between ‘high’ art and ‘low’
culture.
Pop artists seemed to embrace the media boom that came after world war 2, which is
most likely why the style got so popular so quickly.
The picture to the left is a perfect example of what pop art actually is, the artist took an
image of someone who was well known at the time, and added a variety of bright and
dark colors most likely all from a different source.
They also added some shapes to what she’s wearing, earrings included.

Modernist critics were initially horrified by the artists’ use of low subject matter and by the
‘apparently’ uncritical treatment of it. However pop actually took both, art into new areas of subject
matter and developed art into new ways of presenting it.
So it was really better for the art genre as a whole as it brought more new eyes to it.
At the start of the movement British Pop art was similar to American Pop Art because the British
artists took a lot of inspiration from American pop culture, they were still different though because
each artist had a different perspective on culture.
The British side tended to use more irony and parody.
Pop art was made for a wide audience, it’s low cost to make, easily produced, witty, and gimmicky.
The image on the top right is an artists’ interpretation of the Beatles ‘Abby Road’ album cover, they
added a lot of color all around the cover, as well as changing some of the members on the image at
the top. Most likely coming from one of the British artists, (although it’s possible it could’ve come
form America given the world wide appeal of The Beatles.)

David Bourndon- Warhol, 759 13 WAR
‘Eight Elvises’ is a silkscreen painting that was painted by Andy Warhol in
1963.
The piece is composed of 8 identical overlapping images of Elvis dressed as a
cowboy, and it’s silkscreened over a silver background.
The piece used to contain more images beside this one, it also included some
head shots of Elizabeth Taylor.
The theme of this painting is ‘death in America’ although
later on they became the ‘death and disaster’ paintings.
These are some of Warhol’s more serious pieces, and
include subjects such as: car crashes, food poisoning, the
atom bomb, and gangster funerals.
He made this piece to avoid mass consumerism at his first
major exhibition abroad.

‘The shot Marilyn's’ was painted by Warhol in 1964. It includes 4 canvases all
of which are 40 inches and each one has a picture of Marilyn Monroe, each
one is shot through the forehead by one bullet.
The reason for the name is a friend of the factory, where the paintings were
stored asked Warhol if she could shoot them, under the impression that she
wanted to photograph the photos, he agreed. She then went into her purse,
pulled out a small revolver, and proceeded to shoot all 4 of the paintings.
‘Self Portrait’ is a 1986 piece by Warhol, and it depicts an image of
the artist which is taken from a polaroid. The portrait itself is in a
camouflage-patterned foreground with a black background.
He made this a few months before his death which was in February
1987. There’s a contrast between the inhumanity of the
camouflage on his face, which hints at danger. He’s also in direct
contact with the viewer with the eye contact.
This is one of his more unique pieces since he included himself in
his own work, which he wasn’t known for.

For my own poster, I
was thinking of
including some
characters from a
popular movie, or TV
show and surrounding
them with colors that
would be out of place in
the context of the
scene.
I can edit some aspects
of the characters as well,
which is a way parody,
and giving the viewer
something to laugh at,
which is something that
pop art is known for.
I’ll need to find a still from a scene that
already has very neutral lighting, not
too bright, or too dark. But it would
have to be obvious that the things I
add, weren’t there when I started
editing.
I could add my own
background to the still I
choose to use. If the
characters are a more
serious tone or just bad
guys then I can take out
all their color and make
them black and white.
If I want to add social
commentary, which
some pop artists were
known to do, I could
add a country’s flag as
the background, and
take the color out of
that as well.
Alternatively I could have a
bunch of good and bad
characters mixed in with one
another, and all them are
shaded a different color.
The background for that one
might just be a simple plain
color.
I’m aiming for
some of it to be
subtle, and some
of it to be more in
your face.

10. Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule

• Add notes here on how you stuck to your plan/had to change your
plan and why
• The plan was pretty easy to follow from the start, we had a clear plan of what we wanted to do,
and I think the final product turned out really well.
• The plan never had to be changed, that doesn’t mean it was all easy though, finding a good main
image was hard because of the amount of options there were.
• The core reason the product ended up working well is because we were all responsible for at least
one aspect of it, which led to a lot of good ideas becoming one.
• There was more then enough time to put the product together as well, we had all day and most
of next. So we weren’t under any pressure to get it done quickly which would have resulted in a
rushed and incomplete product.
• There were some changes we made to the product later on down the line, it didn’t have an
impact on the plan at all though, we just had add a name to who was responsible for it.

• Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved
these
• 1) The problem I had the biggest issue with was figuring out how to capture the ‘pop art’
style in photoshop. I did end up finding enough tools to come close enough to recreating
the style though.
• 2) I had an issue with trying to find what colours to use, since a lot of pop art uses bright
and happy colours, since a lot of pieces are made out of irony and parody. I did manage
to find a few to use as an example with a more serious tone.
• 3) The only other problem I really had was I couldn’t really add anything else to my final
poster since it would’ve been too busy. So instead I just changed some things in the
background, and changed the gamma of the main image, it made the image look better
while only having 2 main focuses.

15. Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others
• Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with
your team and this benefited the project
• 1) Coming up with ideas was when we worked really well, most of the ideas just
came all naturally since there were three of us. I worked best in a group in this
case.
• 2) I worked best when we were following along the with the plan and was
working with the others in the group. It wasn’t just one person working on one
thing, we all had a say in what got to be done.
• 3) I learnt more about Photoshop when I was working with this group, which I
think is where I worked the best. I can apply everything I learnt with this group
into my own projects in the future.

16. Task 5 – Evaluation - Feedback
• Discuss the feedback you received from your tutor during the project and
how you used this to improve the project
• Our tutor saw what we were looking at during our research period and gave us some
ideas that we could have used in the poster.
• One piece of feedback that we got not just from the tutor, but from someone else in the
group, is we can mash up a few different things that we were thinking of including.
Which we did considering doing since we wanted to include something from pop culture.
• We were also given some recommendations for the colours that we could use later on,
we decided to use a character from a horror movie so the feedback was, to consider
using brighter colours around the character. We did use that idea since it works really
well with what pop art actually is.
• Our final product ended up looking a lot like a comic strip, we only got it to look like that
because of the feedback we got during the research period.
