2. superfast 4gee
4GEE from EE is the UK’s first superfast mobile data service, running on the UK’s first
4G mobile network: a network designed first and foremost for data.
4GEE lets your staff work as flexibly and productively on the move as they do in the
office. And because it also lets you take advantage of the latest and most innovative
technology, 4GEE opens up new and more powerful ways of working, helping put your
business ahead of the competition.
The advantages of 4GEE
Improving the things you do today.
4GEE, EE’s 4G network, lets you do the things you do over mobile now, but
up to five times faster. With higher mobile data speeds, you waste less
time waiting for things like large files or email attachments to download
or accessing resources like SharePoint, team drives and intranets on your
corporate network. And apps with a heavy graphical interface, like maps,
become much more useable and reliable.
Opening up new ways of working.
4GEE also opens the door to mobilising a new generation of applications, with
new, game-changing technologies no longer restricted to the office. From HD
video conferencing to cloud apps, real-time collaboration on documents to
innovating with video, 4GEE has the potential to transform your businesses
by increasing the effectiveness, scope, scale and speed of the work you’re
able to do remotely.
Why superfast?
Faster by design.
4G, also known as LTE or Long Term Evolution, is much more efficient at
transferring data than 3G. 4G increases the amount of data that can be
sent over the air by employing a different frequency, more powerful devices
and new data processing techniques. The flatter architecture of 4G’s core
network decreases latency (the delay as data is sent), and this, combined with
speeds that are up to five times faster than 3G, gives your people the ability
to work faster, smarter and more productively than over 3G.
A bigger and better network.
EE already has the UK’s biggest and best 3G network, and our aim is to have
18,500 ultra modern masts across the UK – more than any other network –
each with 2G, 3G and 4G transmitters, making the EE network bigger, faster
and more reliable than ever.

3. SUPERFAST 4GEE
4GEE will speed up and improve the
experience of things you do today, like:
• Downloading
Average download speeds of 8–12 Mb/s per second mean no more hanging around,
even when you’re downloading huge files like presentations, sales inventories and
blueprints. So you can just get on with the job.
• Uploading
With average upload speeds of 5–6 Mb/s per second, you can do so much more
while you’re on the move, including sending live video, securing your data by
backing-up your laptop remotely, and connecting and collaborating with colleagues,
clients and consultants via video conferencing.
• Real-time apps
With an average latency of just 80 milliseconds (one third lower than 3G),
interactive, real-time services like cloud apps or virtualised desktops are more
enjoyable and useable over phones, tablets and laptops. And with better latency
and higher upload and download speeds, HD video calling over 4G is fluid, not stop
and start, so it’s far more usable.
4GEE will also enable new ways of working:
• Flexible working for a happier workforce
4GEE’s superfast email and internet allows your people to be efficient and
productive wherever they are, and gives them the option of using collaborative
tools like video conferencing and Webex rather than travelling to the same location
to work together. Given more flexibility in where, when and how they choose to
work, your workforce will be happier and more productive. Your business also
stands to make big savings from minimising costly and time-consuming travel and
taking advantage of hot-desking to optimise your office space, cutting one of your
biggest fixed costs.
• Cloud apps
Cloud apps are more useable and reliable out of the office over 4G, making new,
more secure and more cost effective IT models feasible on the move.
• More flexible IT
Faster upload speeds mean routine IT tasks can be done on the go. And with vital
‘housekeeping’ tasks that can be done remotely, such as securing data by backing
up their laptops, your staff will spend less time travelling to and from the office.
Instead, they can get on with the job you pay them for, with sales staff freed up to
make more calls, visit more clients, and engineers able to install more
equipment and fix more faults.
• New ways of using video
Video over 4GEE opens up a whole world of collaboration and cooperation, giving
staff in remote locations access to expertise back in the office (or on the other
side of the world), with, for instance:
– Junior engineers using head cams to share what they’re seeing and get an
expert’s eye on the problem
– Loss adjustors relaying images of damage for insurance claims
– Construction workers providing evidence of job completion
• Quicker set-up of pop-ups and small offices
Need to get a pop-up shop, construction or other temporary sites up and running
in a hurry? Rather than wait for a fixed line to be installed, get data connectivity
set up in no time with 4G. If your small offices are too far from the exchange
for a good fixed broadband connection, 4GEE could even replace your fixed
broadband altogether.
4. SUPERFAST 4GEE
A superfast rollout
We want your business to benefit from 4G superfast, so we’re investing £1.5 billion
over three years in the speediest mobile network technology rollout the world has
ever seen. As a result:
• London will soon have the biggest 4G footprint of any European city, making it
Europe’s most connected city
• 16 UK cities – London, Edinburgh, Cardiff, Belfast, Bristol, Birmingham, Leeds,
Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, Southampton, Hull,
Nottingham and Derby – will have 4GEE by the end of 2012
• We’ll be rolling out 4GEE to reach more cities and rural areas so that 70% of the
UK’s population will be covered by the end of 2013
• 98% of the UK population will be covered by 4GEE by the end of 2014
Boosting British business
We believe that 4G will give British businesses an edge, driving investment,
employment and innovation in Britain. And we’re not the only ones who think so:
• 86% of British business leaders believe 4G will increase productivity
• Thanks to 4G it’s estimated that by 2015 37 million work hours will be saved each
year, saving almost £4bn
• By 2020, 4G will have added 0.5% to the UK’s GDP
