Editorial Cartooning is derived
from two words:
Caricature – which means a sketch or a
description which exaggerates the peculiarities of a
person or defects of a thing.
Lampoon – which means a remark that attacks
and makes fun of a person in a more or less negative
way.
Cartoon
Visual interpretation of a news or issue through
illustration or caricature.
Similar to Editorial Writing (both discuss timely
issues)
Similar to poster making (both use illustrations to
convey ideas)
Difference from editorial article (medium is
artworks/illustrations)
Difference from poster (simple, easy to
understand)
The newspaper page reserved for the editorial
section also includes editorial cartoons.
Editorial cartoons are actually editorials in
pictorial form.
Editorial cartoons are almost anywhere in the
newspaper (it could be in the first page and editorial
page)
Editorial cartoons depict social, political,
economic, cultural and historical conditions.
The editorial cartoons are primarily designed to
crystallized ideas regarding the current affairs of a
changing society.
Cartoons serve as potent vehicles for ridicule, for
criticism and also to entertain or to exert an influence
on the part of the reading public.
Cartoons play a vital and effective function in
influencing public opinion.
Cartoons too play an important part in providing
a link between the news and views of the paper over
any particular story.
Cartoon must be topical.
A cartoonist is not only an artist, often of
distinction, but a news reporter and letter-writer
rolled into one.
Bear in mind that cartoons should not compete
with the text but rather supplement/ complement.

Practical tips…
Minimize the use of words. The drawing should
suffice.
Use symbols which are somehow universal in
treatment. Something that even ordinary viewers
could decipher.
Exaggerate the inclusion of emotion and state of being
thru facial expression, clothing, lines, shadows, etc.
