DESIGN HIERARCHY
Aside from our intended values explained
in the previous sections, we choose to
design according to a design hierarchy of
needs. Much like Maslow’s counterpart,
it ensures that the fundamental elements
of the design, with respect to functionality
and reliability, are completely satisfied
before moving up a the tiered pyramid to
more creative objectives. This concept
provides a stable base for design, giving
the client piece of mind in obtaining a fully
encompassing scheme.

PROJECT APPROACH
Team Vision will follow a well-structured and organised plan to achieve the aims and requirements
of our client, the New Papworth Hospital. With the project based on The Cambridge Biomedical
Campus, we are well aware of the cultural, social and scientific significance which is associated
with this world class institution and facility. It is of paramount importance that we offer a solution
which adds a new dynamic to the campus whilst also complimenting the existing infrastructure.
Using the RIBA Plan of Work 2013 as a template we will begin by identifying a strategic definition
for the project. We will discuss initial thoughts and requirements for the hospital and conduct an
extensive yet concise site analysis. Job roles for each team member will be considered based on
their knowledge and experience.
Consolidating our findings will be part of the preparation and brief section of the programme. It
is at this point where we will begin to outline our primary aims and objectives for the hospital. This
will encompass many aspects of the project including working environments, healthcare benefits,
commercial opportunities, sustainability goals as well as many others. However, we firmly believe
that the occupants are the primary focus of the project given the building typology. We understand
how the building and construction industry can have a positive impact on the users by promoting
creative architecture and innovative service strategies in one cohesive design.
Our comprehensive planning will help to influence our concept design, the third stage of the
project. As we are adding to an existing campus, a masterplanning exercise will be conducted to
ensure a homogeneous site which will operate effectively for both new and existing users. Upon
completion of this task, the new hospital can be assessed as an individual entity, drawing up initial
design proposals and constantly refining them to ensure the requirements of the clients are met.
The developed design phase will begin to implement the services systems which have been
devised by our team. This will be an iterative method where the design will be continuously
adapted to ensure the building can operate at an optimal performance level without compromising
on the integrity of the design.
This outlined method will ensure that a well resolved solution is formulated which not only fulfils
the needs of the client but adds to this biomedical research facility which can provide benefits on
both a micro and macro scale.

DESIGN ETHOS AND INSPIRATION
1.
Creativity
2.
Proficiency
3.
Usability
4.
Reliability
5.
Functionality
Taking the clients brief and building upon
our own design ethos, we can begin to
formulate potential ideas for future tasks
that we would undertake. On the right
are four inspirational photographs for
design ideologies we would like to instil
into our project. The Lloyds of London
and Pompidou Centre buildings portray
our vision of using external structure
and services as an expressional
language to communicate legibility
and functionality. The next inspiration
comes in the form of Google’s proposed
main office campus in Mountain View,
California. Community, space and awe-
inspiring design are at the heart of this
project, and that is something that we
would aim to emulate in Cambridge.
CURRENT SITE AND BRIEF
The strategic masterplan for the campus is said to
need strong urban structures that underpin its
relationship with the city of Cambridge, and of the
colleges it supports. It needs to be set out logically, with
the infrastructure built around a web of interconnecting
streets and spaces that echo feel of the existing
colleges. A hierarchy of spaces will be important so
such that highly populated streets are funnelled out
into open courtyards, encouraging cohesion between
different disciplines. Sustainability is also high on
the clients agenda, and this will need to be addressed
with reduced travel and energy requirements in and
around the campus.

  • 7. 7 I N I T I A L T H O U G H T S DESIGN ETHOS AND INSPIRATION 1. Creativity 2. Proficiency 3. Usability 4. Reliability 5. Functionality Taking the clients brief and building upon our own design ethos, we can begin to formulate potential ideas for future tasks that we would undertake. On the right are four inspirational photographs for design ideologies we would like to instil into our project. The Lloyds of London and Pompidou Centre buildings portray our vision of using external structure and services as an expressional language to communicate legibility and functionality. The next inspiration comes in the form of Google’s proposed main office campus in Mountain View, California. Community, space and awe- inspiring design are at the heart of this project, and that is something that we would aim to emulate in Cambridge. CURRENT SITE AND BRIEF The strategic masterplan for the campus is said to need strong urban structures that underpin its relationship with the city of Cambridge, and of the colleges it supports. It needs to be set out logically, with the infrastructure built around a web of interconnecting streets and spaces that echo feel of the existing colleges. A hierarchy of spaces will be important so such that highly populated streets are funnelled out into open courtyards, encouraging cohesion between different disciplines. Sustainability is also high on the clients agenda, and this will need to be addressed with reduced travel and energy requirements in and around the campus.
