What is a Parasite?
A PARASITE IS A LIVING THING...
...that TAKES benefits from others...
...AND TAKES...
...AND TAKES...
... WITHOUT GIVING BACK IN RETURN.
You’re Now Taking, Taking, Taking
DEPENDENT ON OTHERS FOR
BASIC HUMAN NEEDS...
... FOOD ... ... CLOTHING ...
... SHELTER ...
... SAFETY...
... KNOWLEDGE...
IT’S STILL OK BECAUSE
• YOU CANNOT GIVE WHAT YOU
DO NOT HAVE
BUT ONE DAY...
WHEN YOUR TIME FOR TAKING IS OVER,
YOU MUST GIVE BACK
OR BE A PARASITE.
WHY ARE WE DOING
THIS CLASS PROJECT?
HELLO.
THIS IS NOT JUST A PROJECT.
THIS IS FOR YOU TO
PREPARE
YOUR
CONTRIBUTION TO
SOCIETY
WHEN YOUR TIME
FOR GIVING BACK
BEGINS.
WHEN WILL YOU GIVE BACK TO SOCIETY?
PAST PRESENT
2012
FUTURE
2056
GIVING BACK
2016
VERY SOON.
What is a Contribution?
THIS IS WHEN YOU GIVE
SOMETHING FROM YOURSELF
TO ADD TO A GREATER GOOD
SOMETHING FROM my SELF
TO ADD
TO THE GREATER GOOD
FROM my SELF
NOT FROM OTHERS.
my OWN self
my OWN mind
my OWN effort
A contributor is the OWN-er of something that adds value to benefit others.
A parasite is one who benefits from another without adding value for others.
TO ADD
means
TO GIVE
TO INCREASE
TO IMPROVE
TO THE GREATER GOOD
means
FOR THE GOOD OF THE GREATER NUMBER
TO BENEFIT MANY OTHERS
TO HELP SOCIETY
How Do We Contribute?
ADD
IMPROVE
CREATE
modify
adapt
INVENT

WITH A QUESTION
Coming up are six yellow boxes.
Press the pause key on your video player.
Answer each question before continuing the presentation.
This is to help you understand and remember.
SELF-STUDY GUIDE
Your Contribution: Add Something New
• One who copies old ideas is
a parasite – taking from
others and not adding new
value.
• One who adds new
elements into old ideas is
contributing something
new.
QUESTION: WHEN IS IT OK TO USE THE IDEAS OF OTHERS?
WHY IS THIS NOT BEING A PARASITE?
WHY IS THIS THE ACTION OF A PARASITE?
Your Contribution: Improve Something
• One who repeats the ideas
of others is still a parasite:
taking, using, benefiting
without adding value.
• One who uses the ideas of
others in a different way is
contributing something
new. WHY IS THIS NOT BEING A PARASITE?
QUESTION: WHEN IS IT OK TO USE THE IDEAS OF OTHERS?
WHY IS THIS THE ACTION OF A PARASITE?
How Do We Become Contributors?
COPY
REPEAT
STEAL
ADD
IMPROVE
CREATE
How Do We Become Parasites?
IMPORTANT
• Acknowledge the source of an idea
or element
–that is not yours or
–that you borrow from others.
HOW?
• State where the source can be found
or who the source is
WHY?
• This is a requirement of all academic
scholarship.
Your Contribution: Create Something New
And perhaps ...
sooner or later...
You might come up
with something
totally new.
Use your imagination.
Imagine specific action.
For example
Imagine benefits
Imagine beneficiaries
WITH A SUGGESTED ACTION
Coming up are six yellow boxes.
Press the pause key on your video player.
Do the suggested action before continuing the presentation.
This is to help you understand and remember.
SELF-STUDY GUIDE
1.Select a problem you experienced.
• Missing pens, USBs, buttons,
umbrellas?
• Broken shoes, bags, eyeglasses?
• Misplaced stuff?
• Lack of time?
2.Create a unique, easy, cheap solution.
Strategy 1: Find a Common Problem
Your Contribution: Improve Something
1. Choose an idea created by others.
• A laptop
• A bar of soap
• A sachet of hair coloring powder
2. Add your own concept to that idea.
• An ethnic laptop cover?
• Soap leftovers into new soap?
• Black hair coloring in hair gel?
Strategy 2: Add something new to the ideas of others
Your Contribution: Add Something New
1. Combine old problems and solutions.
• Problem 1: tangled hair. Solution 1:
plastic comb.
• Problem 2: irritated scalp
• Solution 2: scalp medication
2. Add your new idea to that combination.
• Can a cheaper, softer comb prevent
irritated scalp and save money on
scalp medication?
Strategy 3: Add something new to old problems and solutions
Your Contribution: Improve Something
SUMMARY
• A parasite: repeats, copies, or
steals the ideas of others for self-
benefit without giving in return.
• A contributor: improves or adds
to the ideas of others – or creates
something new – to benefit the
self and others in society.
WHAT’S THE REASON FOR THIS PROJECT?
You’re not a student.
You are a scholar.
You’re not just a scholar.
You’re a scholar in a model university.
An ordinary student does ordinary work.
A model scholar creates different work.
Why be different? 
WHAT IS A MODEL?
A model is a higher standard or something
different that people look up to.
• A fashion model gives a different image.
• A model car gives a different experience.
• A model house gives a different design.
• A model university gives a different
education.
• A model scholar gives a different contribution.
That’s the reason for this project.
